Mass culture of fairy shrimp Streptocephalus proboscideus (Crustacea ? Anostraca) and its use in larviculture of the Persian sturgeon, Acipenser persicus

Abstract: This study was conducted with cysts of Streptocephalus proboscideus obtained from the University of Gent-Belgium. The cysts were hatched in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) medium. The nauplii were reared at the Sturgeon Research Institute using a pure culture of Scenedesmus obliquus alga supplied at a density of 5 Â 10 3 cell mL À 1 that gradually increased to 1 Â 10 4 , 5 Â 10 4 and 1 Â 10 5 cell mL À1 with the growth of the nauplii. The nauplii attained sexual maturity and started producing cysts in 8 … Show more

“…Because of the importance of fairy shrimp as a live feed for aquaculture, there have been several studies on nutritional evaluation and cultivation patterns (Velu, Czeczuga & Munuswamy 2003;Namin, Arshad & Ramezanpoor 2007;Dararat, Starkweather & Sanoamuang 2011). Black disease is one of the major problems, which can lead to the collapse of the culture (Saejung et al 2011).…”

“…Nutritional compounds of fairy shrimps are most comparable with Artemia , which may contain high levels of nutritional quality and has essential amino acids, fatty acids and having high amounts of carotenoid complex antioxidants such as astaxanthin, canthaxanthin and antheraxanthin (Dararat, Sanoamuang, & Lomthaisong, ; Munuswamy, ; Velu & Munuswamy, , ). Fairy shrimp being utilized as diets for larvae, fingerlings and adult fishes, it has significant economic value in the aquaculture industry (Namin, Arshad, & Ramezanpoor, ; Sriputhorn & Sanoamuang, ; Velu & Munuswamy, , .) adult fishes.…”

“…Fairy shrimps can be freeze‐dried for later use or made into flakes or different kinds of formulated feeds like Artemia (Velu & Munuswamy, ). Regarding specific genera, Streptocephalus species many studies have been conducted to evaluate as food for larvae of different fish, prawns and ornamental fish (Ali & Dumont, ; Namin et al, ; Sriputhorn & Sanoamuang, ; Velu & Munuswamy, ).…”
