Martensitic transformation and shape memory effect in ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Ni2FeGa

Abstract: We have synthesized ferromagnetic Heusler alloy Ni2FeGa using the melt-spinning technique. The Ni2FeGa ribbon, having a high chemical ordering L21 structure, exhibits a thermoelastic martensitic transformation from cubic to orthorhombic structure at 142 K and a premartensitic transformation. The alloy has a relatively high Curie temperature of 430 K, a magnetization of 73 Am2/kg, and a low saturated field of 0.6 T. The textured samples with preferentially oriented grains show a completely recoverable two-way s… Show more

“…Except Pt 2 MnSn, the other three materials, namely Ni 2 MnGa, Ni 2 FeGa, Pt 2 MnGa, of the lower panel are already reported to undergo martensite transition. 10,30,31 Now we plot ( Figure-3 to Figure-6 SMA property (x=2.00).…”

“…All the other parameters like crucible -wheel distance and crucible opening were also constant. Melt spinning, as a production technique has many advantages for the preparation of Heusler alloys, since it has a profound effect on the atomic order, which is very important for the structure and the magnetic properties of these materials [13]. Some of the samples were wrapped in tantalum foil, encapsulated in evacuated quartz tubes and annealed for various time periods ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour at various temperatures from 923 K to 1123 K. The thermal treatment was interrupted by water quenching.…”

“…In 2003, we reported a class of new promising FSMAs of Ni-Fe-Ga synthesized by using the melt-spinning technique [8]. It was verified that the new alloys have a high chemical ordering L2 1 structure for parent phase at high-temperature and exhibit a thermoelastic martensitic transformation from cubic to orthorhombic structure at low temperature.…”

“…Therefore, it has attracted much attention as high performance solidstate actuator materials. Many FSMAs systems have been developed from Heusler alloy system, such as Ni 2 MnGa [1][2][3], Ni 2 MnAl [4], Co-Ni-Ga (Al) [5,6], and Ni-Fe-Ga [7,8].…”
