Lawele Granular Asphalt (LGA) is a Buton asphalt product derived from the Lawele area in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Although it possesses great potential, LGA utilization has not been fully maximized. One of the challenges is the need for a modifier to extract asphalt from the minerals within LGA. Candlenut oil is a potential modifier that can be used with LGA in Cold Paving Hot Mix Asbuton (CPHMA) due to its similar polarity. Therefore, the aim of this research is to evaluate the performance of Lawele Granular Asphalt (LGA) with candlenut oil as a modifier in Cold Paving Hot Mix Asbuton (CPHMA). The Marshall test was conducted to assess the performance of CPHMA with candlenut oil as a modifier. Furthermore, several variations were examined, including the quantity of the modifier, duration of heating and compaction, heating temperature, and storage duration, using seven different mixtures and three storage periods. The optimal composition produced a Marshall value of 687.68 kg, which increased with a longer mixing duration and higher heating temperature. The results showed that the Marshall value met the standards for CPHMA in Indonesia, as well as for VIM, VMA, VFB, and Flow values. The low flow indicated the density of the CPHMA pavement, while the MQ value showed its ability to withstand deformation of 200.13 kg/1 cm. The behavior of Marshall resistance was supported by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, which exhibited similar compound groups between asphalt and the leached results of LGA with candlenut oil, indicating the presence of asphalt (binder). There was a slight decrease in the Marshall value after a 7-day duration, showing an increase after a 21-day storage period. Therefore, candlenut oil served as a viable alternative modifier for LGA

The use of locally available natural resources is increasingly becoming popular for the production of novel building materials, particularly in terms of creativity. In Indonesia, Buton Island has significant amounts of asphalt that can be altered to produce high-grade building materials. During the asphalt manufacturing process, energy efficiency and environmental preservation must be considered, as modified asphalt requires less energy. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the optimal asphalt content from various mixtures, including Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC), Asphalt Concrete Binder Course (AC-BC), and Hot Rolled Sheet Wearing Course (HRS-WC). Several parameters such as stability, flow, the Marshall Quotient (MQ), void in the mix (VIM), void in mineral aggregate (VMA), and void-filled bitumen (VFB) were used as attributes of Marshall. Subsequently, an empirical laboratory (Marshall) test was carried out to measure deformation resistance. The results showed that the appropriate asphalt concentration for AC-WC, AC-BC, and HRS-WC combinations was 6.25%, 5.80%, and 6.50%, respectively. The analysis showed the significance of determining optimal asphalt content for these mixtures containing modified Asbuton binder. The excellent adhesive properties of Asbuton-based bitumen made these mixtures suitable for applications requiring high fracture toughness and low strength, such as concrete barriers.

To address the excessive depletion of natural resources in Indonesia's civil construction sector, there's a rising trend in utilizing plastic waste from packaging, such as beverage bottles and plastic bags, alongside renewable energy sources like Modified Buton Asphalt (MBA). MBA serves as a partial substitute for both fine and coarse natural aggregates and non-renewable energy sources like petroleum bitumen. This study aimed to investigate the effects of incorporating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polypropylene (PP) waste as partial substitutes for coarse and fine aggregates through experiments and t-tests. The objective was to determine how the stress-strain behavior of asphalt mixtures formed using MBA changed with the addition of this mixture. Additionally, compressive strength and elastic modulus were calculated under mixed compressive loads. PET and PP plastic waste replaced natural coarse and fine aggregates at three volume percentages: 1%, 2%, and 3%, with a PET:PP ratio of 50%. A manual grater was used to shred PET and PP plastic bottles into shredded plastic waste, which was retained in sieve no. 50 after sieving. The study found that adding PET, PP plastic, and MBA waste enhanced the asphalt mixture's mechanical strength and modified relevant variables, resulting in a more elastic and ductile behavior.
