Marketing System Failure: Revisioning Layton’s Marketing System Model

Abstract: The purpose of this conceptual paper is to examine the mechanisms of long term marketing system failure from a path dependent, marketing systems perspective in order to identify ways of avoiding such situations in future. Using the model of Layton and Duffy (2018) we critically analyze the current plastic packaging crisis and its evolution over time. Through examining the mechanisms of failure from a systems perspective, we extend the path dependent, marketing system evolution model and advance understanding o… Show more

“…Agents are concerned that the VR-tour will "make actors do things" (Latour 2005, p.160), severing emotional connections and reducing enrollment with other actors. This would inhibit agents' positional power (Williams, Davey, and Johnstone 2021) and their ability to make their own network connections (i.e., consumers at open houses), ultimately destabilizing their current value cocreation system. Furthermore, agents not using the technology reported that VR-tour technology is not necessary and that their current marketing practices are good enough.…”

“…Such changes will occur over time, not instantaneously, and asks the question: what community provisioning system dynamics will generate better, rather than worse than responses? responses are getting it wrong, (Williams et al 2020) one needs to identify, examine, and monitor the core dynamics blocking the desired outcomes. Often times blockages will cascade from one level to another and reinforce inefficient complex social mechanisms.…”

“…We adopted a theory adaptation approach, aiming to "change the scope or perspective of an existing theory by informing it with other theories or perspectives" (Jaakkola, 2020, p. 22). This approach has previously been applied in different fields of management studies, such as environmental sustainability (Hazen et al, 2020;Nylund et al, 2021), marketing (Williams et al, 2020), andmedia (Dal Zotto andOmidi, 2020). Theory adaptation revises a domain theory (the area under study) using a method theory (the theory used for adaptation), and it introduces new perspectives that usually challenge existing constructs, theories and assumptions (Jaakkola, 2020;MacInnis, 2011).…”
