Getting Things Right; Diagnose and Design in The Evolution of Community Provisioning Systems

Abstract: Climate change and a pandemic demonstrate that for most individuals, organisations and governments, it is the tensions that emerge between authoritarian regulatory control and small group independent self-organization, and between simple and complex choices in collective decision making, that present the most difficulties for a shared future. The hoped for outcomes do not always follow the choices made, highlighting the unpredictability of such complex crises. Consequently, drawing on macromarketing, marketing… Show more

“…Finally, macromarketing teaching and scholarship, eventually and in aggregate, makes important contributions to pro-social systems change. As Layton, Domegan, and Duffy 2022, point out: “ Creating positive social impact and societal evolution is easier said than done. Nevertheless, that is the very work, the change, the radical, urgent transformation demanded of macromarketing and indeed marketing … “ (p.12).…”

“…Reinforcing Yurdakul and Atik (2016), their coping strategies were based on collectivist beliefs; deploying their capabilities to pursue desired outcomes in spite of structural constraints. Supporting recent work (Layton, Domegan, and Duffy 2022;Tang and Blocker, 2022), the women adapted to environmental hostility by drawing on their communities of practice, social ties and kinship networks, highlighting the importance of communal resilience and collective action (Beninger and Francis 2021;Carter 2019;Lindeman 2014;Sen 2005). The MFEPs demonstrated attributes of successful group functioning i.e., strong identity and purpose, inclusive decision-making, fast and fair conflict resolution mechanisms, local autonomy, and agreed on behaviors (Layton, Domegan, and Duffy 2022).…”

“…It does so by introducing a focus on the interaction of power and information flows between supply, marketing systems and exchange assemblages. Layton and Domegan (2021) and Layton, Domegan, and Duffy (2022) provide a useful starting point for the analysis of provisioning systems' relevance to future marketing systems research. Using Fanning, O'Neill, and Büchs (2020) descriptions, these authors define provisioning systems as complex social networks, endowed with the social and economic purpose of making needed assortments available to diverse participants (Layton and Domegan 2021, p. 6).…”

“…Тhe concept of marketing efficiency has not been studied in closed and isolated systems that, according to a recent study, have distinctive behavioral patterns compared to those of conventional open systems and can be studied through the lens of chemistry to explain the nonlinear and understudied phenomena of autarky (Stoyanov, Stoyanova, and Stoyanov 2023). Since the design of the famous homeostatic device (Ashby 1960), the prevailing marketing literature has been inspired to develop models of complex adaptive systems that modify their behavior in response to environmental changes (Layton 2011(Layton , 2014Layton, Domegan, and Duffy 2022). This obsolete mentality according to which (macro)marketers should largely adopt a market (exchange) perspective does not help the field of macromarketing evolve (Benton 2021).…”
