The automobile has played a fundamental role in the development of cities in the daily movement of people. This paper analyzes the explosive increase in the number of motorized vehicles in the municipalities of Chile. Additionally, due to its national relevance, a disaggregated analysis of the Metropolitan Area of Santiago is presented. Through statistical data of the last 20 years, the analysis evidenced an explosive but differentiated increase of the automotive fleet. Results show the poorest municipalities with a lower dynamism, while those of the more affluent sectors experience exuberant increases. Particularly in the Metropolitan Area of Santiago, the results follow the same pattern, dynamics that jeopardize the planning and sustainability of national urban areas. A reflection is made focusing on the type of city that is being planned and built throughout the country and the urgency of a strategic public policy in urban public transport.

It is important to study and to know the determining factors of the housing purchase business, as this is often the greatest business deal in a family’s life. The purpose of this study is to identify the profile of the Portuguese regarding the determining factors when searching for apartments to acquire. The methodology used is based on a questionnaire that analyzes the determining factors in the choice of apartments to acquire and the sociodemographic profile of Portuguese people looking for an apartment. The sample consisted of 646 individuals who were looking for an apartment in different regions of Continental Portugal. The determining factors in the choice of apartments have quite adequate levels of validity and reliability, and four dimensions are obtained: negative externalities, positive externalities, a business located on the ground floor and rational interest in proximity to public services. Cluster analysis results show the formation of five clusters, classifying individuals into a generic cluster, urban business cluster, urban services cluster, urban citizens cluster and elitist cluster. This study is expected to contribute to increasing scientific knowledge on the topic and to help real estate developers better match their clients’ preferences.

Urban sprawl has been widely discussed in regard of its economic, political, social and environmental impacts. Consequently, several planning policies have been placed to stop—or at least restrain—sprawling development. However, most of these policies have not been successful at all as anti-sprawl policies partially address only a few determinants of a multifaceted phenomenon. This includes processes of extended suburbanisation, peri-urbanisation and transformation of fringe/belt areas of city-regions. Using as a case study the capital city of Chile—Santiago—thirteen determinants of urban sprawl are identified as interlinked at the point of defining Santiago's sprawling geography as a distinctive space that deserves planning and policy approaches in its own right. Unpacking these determinants and the policy context within which they operate is important to better inform the design and implementation of more comprehensive policy frameworks to manage urban sprawl and its impacts.
