Markers of Oxidant-Antioxidant Equilibrium in Patients with Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Abstract: The concentration of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs) in plasma and erythrocytes, the activity of selected antioxidant enzymes in erythrocytes: catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and the levels of hemoglobin (HGB) and haematocrit (HCT) were determined in 40 patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) subjected to 14 treatment sessions in a Haux Starmed 2200 hyperbaric chamber. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy involved breathing 100% oxygen a… Show more

“…Also, there were no changes in the GPx activity in erythrocytes following a procedure in the hyperbaric chamber, but the activity of this enzyme prior to treatment in patients who had previously used hyperbaric chamber many times was significantly lower than in patients who had received HBO treatment no more than three times [30]. In patients with sudden sensorineural hearing loss, a decrease in the CAT activity in erythrocytes was observed after the first procedure in the hyperbaric chamber, the SOD activity in erythrocytes decreased after the 14th procedure, and the GPx activity increased after the 14th procedure [34].…”

“…However, the mechanism remains unclear. It is likely that mitophagy is related to the ability of HBO to enhance antioxidant enzyme activity and reduce edema in the nervous tissue [28]. Moreover, HBO promotes capillary regeneration and improves microcirculation.…”

“…The use of HBOT has increased markedly in various diseases over the past decade [1]. The etiology for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is defined in only 10 % of cases, whereas the rest are labeled as idiopathic [2][3][4]. So, how can be HBOT effective with a common molecular pathway in treatment of SSNHL?…”

“…The reason for the etiology of sudden hearing loss is not found in many patients and is considered idiopathic [5]. Little is known about the association between SSNHL and oxidative stress [3]. In addition, endothelial dysfunction and vascular diseases are also involved in etiopathogenesis of SSNHL [6].…”
