MARISA: A Self-configuring Metasurfaces Absorption and Reflection Solution Towards 6G

Abstract: Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are considered one of the key disruptive technologies towards future 6G networks. RISs revolutionize the traditional wireless communication paradigm by controlling the wave propagation properties of the impinging signals at will. A major roadblock for RIS is though the need for a fast and complex control channel to continuously adapt to the ever-changing wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we ask ourselves the question: Would it be feasible to remove the need … Show more

“…For starters, we publicly release the dataset 1 we have generated during our empirical characterization in §5, which aggregates a total number of 6.8 • 10 6 power samples. This data can help other researchers study RIS-related problems without the need of building a prototype.…”

“…This operation is referred to as analog beamforming, and it is usually realized through a wireless control channel that the BS utilizes to configure the amplitude and phase responses of the IOS elements. Reconfigurable surfaces that do not need any control channels have recently been proposed as well, but they are out of the scope of this paper [38]. In full-dimensional communications, therefore, the digital beamformer at the BS and the analog beamformer at the IOS can be jointly optimized for achieving the optimal performance.…”

“…Additionally, due to the absence of signal processing units on such nearly-passive metasurfaces, channel estimation and acquisition are usually performed over the entire path from transmitter to the receiver, which may prevent an agile deployment of the system. In Albanese et al (2022), the authors presented a self-configuring metasurfaces absorption and reflection solution, based only on CSI that can be locally estimated at the metasurface, which has power-sensing capabilities and does not require an active control channel.…”
