Marginal alveolar bone height in an adult Swedish population

Abstract: The purpose of the present cross-sectional epidemiologic study was to assess the interproximal alveolar bone level within the dentition of 732 randomly selected adult individuals, stratified according to gender and age. Full mouth series of periapical radiographs were used for the assessments of the relation alveolar bone height/root length (B/R). A computer/digitizer recording method was utilized for the assessments. The results were presented as (i) mean values per age group and gender, (ii) mean frequency o… Show more

“…The coronal level of the tooth-supporting tissues is usually situated at some distance from the CEJ (9, but there is no generally accepted standard against which to estimate (2,21). In the study by Salonen et al (21) the bone level was considered to be intact when 80% or more of the root was supported by bone.…”

“…The differences in the cut-off points are based on the knowledge that periodontitis increases with age (24,25) and therefore a higher cut-off point was chosen for the oldest group. In order to do a cross-tabulation; the material was divided into one group with severe gingival inflammation and one with mild.…”

“…Diagnostic information on the marginal bone level has usually been obtained from 2D radiography (periapical and/or panoramic) (Björn et al, 1969;Albandar et al, 1985;Salonen et al, 1991). However, there are shortcomings associated with these 2D imaging methods even when efforts are made to obtain periodically identical radiographs or to compensate for image distortions.…”
