Marcetia candolleana (Melastomeae – Melastomataceae), a new species from Bahia (Brazil)

Abstract: is apparently restricted to Mucugê, Bahia (Brazil), where it occurs in areas of campo rupestre vegetation. This new species is closely related to the sympatric M. mucugensis Wurdack, but can be easily recognised by its semi-prostate to procumbent habit, reddish glandular-hirsute indument, loose and flexuous branches, leaves with inconspicuous reticulation on the abaxial surface, connectives very shortly prolonged below the thecae, style curved towards the apex, not exceeding the anthers, and pendulous fruit.Re… Show more

“…Structures covered with gland-tipped trichomes on peduncles too short to be seen with a 40 3 magnification stereoscope are referred to as "glandular-punctate" (see Carmo et al 2019). The table of comparative morphological characters among selected species of Marcetia is based on Martins (1989Martins ( , 1993Martins ( , 2000, Martins and Woodgyer (2000), Santos et al (2008Santos et al ( , 2013, Pacifico and Almeda (2022b), and on study material from the herbaria cited above.…”

“…The first morphological and phylogenetic study of the genus was conducted by Santos (2007) and remains unpublished. During the last three decades, 12 species have been described and one new combination was proposed in Marcetia (Martins 1993(Martins , 1995a(Martins , 1995b(Martins , 2000Martins and Woodgyer 2000;Santos et al 2008Santos et al , 2013Pacifico and Almeda 2022b;Almeda et al in press). More recently, an online taxonomic treatment was produced (Santos 2023) as part of the Brazilian Flora 2020 project (BFG 2022).…”

“…Com exceção de Marcetia taxifolia (A.St.-Hil.) DC., que possui ampla distribuição, o gênero é endêmico no Brasil, sendo a Bahia o principal centro de diversidade (Martins 2000, Santos 2008. Em Minas Gerais são registradas sete espécies, destas três ocorrem na Serra do Cipó, M. acerosa Schrank & Mart.…”

“…The genus was last revised by Martins (1989), who identified a number of new species later published by the same author (Martins 2000); Martins also transferred a species of Fritzschia Cham, to Marcetia (Martins 1995). Two further species were described by Martins and Woodgyer (2000) and Santos et al (2008), bringing the number of species in Marcetia to 29.…”
