Mapping the Self with Units of Culture

Abstract: This study explored a method of representing the self graphically using elemental units of culture called memes. A diverse sample of eleven volunteers participated in the co-construction of individual "self-maps" during a series of interviews over a nine month period. Two of the resultant maps are presented as exemplars. Commonalities found in all eleven maps lend support to the notion that there are certain structures to the self that are cross-cultural. The use of memes in mapping those structures was consid… Show more

“…Thus, the process of new knowledge construction using portfolio development is part of the process of identity construction. Robertson (2010) supported the notion that although our selves evolve through time, we need a sense of self-stability to effectively relate to others and engage in forward planning. The sense that we remain the same person despite temporal change is felt at an emotional level and may lead to ideas of having a "true" or essential self.…”

“…Since connotative and affective meaning may also serve to repel discordant ideas and concepts, a dynamic is thereby created allowing for the development of discreet and stable complexes of memes existent in individual minds. The self as mapped by Robertson (2010Robertson ( , 2011aRobertson ( , 2014Robertson ( , 2016 is such an interlocking complex of mutually attractive memes with such complexes exhibiting persistence and stability coupled with a capacity to change or evolve over time. Repellant memes may either exemplify "what the self is not" or introduce instability into the self.…”

“…In a qualitative study of a cross-cultural sample Robertson (2010) found that the selves of healthy adults universally included elements of volition, constancy, distinctness, productivity, intimacy, social interest and feeling. It is a reasonable speculation that the self-maps of some populations with mental health disorders would display deficiencies in one or more of these areas.…”

“…(p. 190) Transitions involving the incorporation of another person's well-being into one's own self may be reinforced or authenticated by the mutual declaration of public vows that have meaning for the couples involved (Robertson, 2016). By reducing self-descriptive narratives to elemental units of culture and then setting these "memes" in relation to each other according to their connotative, affective and behavioural implications held in the mind of the individual, Robertson (2010Robertson ( , 2014 created two dimensional representations or "maps" of the self. Using such a method, it would be possible to track hypothesized transitions to selves in developing and committed relationships.…”
