Mapping the Landscape of Behavioral Theories: Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: The term "behavioral" has become a hot topic in recent years in various disciplines; however, there is yet limited understanding of what theories can be considered behavioral theories and what fields of research they can be applied to. Through a crossdisciplinary literature review, this article identifies sixty-two behavioral theories from 963 search results, mapping them in a diagram of four groups (factors, strategies, learning and conditioning, and modeling), and points to five discussion points: understand… Show more

“…The evidence supports Kwon and Silva's [ 27 ] observation about human behaviour, which is guided by three key issues. These are beliefs about the likely outcomes of the behaviour and the evaluations of these outcomes (behavioural beliefs), beliefs about the normative expectations of others and motivation to comply with the expectations (normative beliefs), and beliefs about the presence of factors that may promote or hinder the performance of the behaviour (control beliefs).…”

“…Heterogeneity and multiscale features address the modelling approach to the so-called kinetic theory of active particles 18 which has already been applied to various branches of the so-called behavioural sciences. 7,12,92 For instance, the immune competition, 22 collective learning, 30,31 and the dynamics of crowds and swarms, 2,9 where understanding the dynamics of the collective behaviour leads to a deeper understanding of the contagion dynamics.…”

“…Fisheries researchers have criticized the reliance of rational choice and microeconomic theory to explain the goals for fishers, and the limited use of psychosocial and sociocultural factors that shape action towards those goals in ecosystems and communities (Chuenpagdee & Jentoft, 2009; van Putten et al., 2012). Human behavioural research has empirically supported alternatives to utility maximization and the focus on profit as the main goal for human behaviour (Kwon & Silva, 2020). For instance, policy sciences research and environmental change literature has situated diverse human values as more reflective of resources users’ goals, including individual goals such as profit, status, power and affection (Clark, 2002; Jones et al., 2016).…”
