Mapping the design process during the conceptual phase of building projects

Abstract: This paper reports the outcome of a 2‐year research project that set out to provide a process map of the concept stage of building projects. From a literature review, comparison of current process maps, and through interviews and case study analyses, a tentative new framework for the concept stage was developed and tested. It comprises 12 activities in five phases. The framework formed the basis of a graphical method used to plot the activities of design teams in a series of workshops. This graphical method il… Show more

“…The methodology proposal is based on the state of the art (Appleton, 2011;Arioglu and Acun, 2006;Freitas, 2012;Van Hees, 2000;Macmillan et al, 2002;Veiga, 2009;Veiga et al, 2004) and the related research after contact with different types of professional participants in rehabilitation specifically by the inquiry, as well as its critical analysis. This allows to establish priorities and to validate and complement the main supporting procedures to an intervention on old renders.…”

“…Artificial design processes simulated through workshops (e.g. Austin et al, 2001;Macmillan et al, 2000) allow to focus the research, by only studying one aspect or part of the design process, comparing different teams working on the same problem, etc. Observation of the design process can take place directly or indirectly.…”
