Objective: The aim of this work was to evaluate the association between pretreatment inﬂammation-based factors and outcomes in patients with macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and its subtypes after intravitreal ranibizumab or conbercept implant. Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients who were diagnosed with ME secondary to RVO at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University between January 2017 and January 2019, and who subsequently received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. Blood-based parameters were measured before treatment, and correlations between best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and each of 3 parameters – neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) – were analyzed to identify predictors of effective intravitreal injection treatment outcomes. Results: A total of 315 treatment-naïve eyes treated with anti-VEGF drugs for RVO-ME were retrospectively analyzed in this study. The mean PLR value was significantly different in the effective and ineffective group for RVO-ME (138.03 ± 48.61 vs. 106.79 ± 27.28), branch RVO (BRVO)-ME (216.47 ± 53.04 vs. 185.94 ± 51.47), and central RVO (CRVO)-ME (231.07 ± 66.05 vs. 196.20 ± 60.44). The cutoff value of the PLR was 97.92, the area under the curve was 0.70, and the sensitivity and specificity were 81.5 and 44.3%, respectively. The mean NLR value was significantly different in the effective and ineffective groups for RVO-ME (2.20 ± 1.40 vs. 1.92 ± 0.89), and BRVO-ME (2.01 ± 0.80 vs. 1.82 ± 0.84), but not in patients with CRVO-ME (2.51 ± 2.02 vs. 2.12 ± 0.95). There are no significant differences between BRVO-ME and its subtype groups in MLR values. But the mean MLR value was significantly higher in the conbercept group than in the ranibizumab group among patients in the effective group (0.27 ± 0.11 vs. 0.25 ± 0.14). Conclusion: Higher pretreatment PLR was associated with BCVA in patients with RVO-ME and its subtypes who were treated with anti-VEGF drugs. The PLR may be used as a predictive and prognostic tool for effective intravitreal injection treatment outcomes.

Purpose: To measure the growth of research published in Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology (PJO) during the year 2017 – 1995 through the bibliometric study. Study Design: Retrospective and observational study. Place and Duration of Study: Medical Libraries, College of Applied Medical Sciences and College of Science & Health Profession, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh Saudi Arabia. June 2018 to April 2019. Material and Methods: The data for the study was retrieved from websites of e-journal of Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology (PJO) and Pak Medi Net for statistical analysis in MS Excel 2010 version. Results: This study examined 855 articles published in 24; 35% volumes and 96; 8.9% articles per issues in Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology (PJO) from 2018 to 1995 contributed by 2816; 3.2% authors. A gender-wise comparison among the contributing authors revealed male 2378 (84.4%) higher than the female 437 (15.5%) authors. It is also revealed that 141; 16.4% of articles were written by a female as the first author during the studied period. Majority of 734; 85.8% articles were written by multi-authors instead of solo authors 121; 14.1% out of 855 articles. Conclusion: This study finds that regularly publishing of Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology (PJO) get the confidence of researchers, institutes, and readers. This journal follows the international rules for peer-review processes. This process assures authors and help journal to maintaining a constant approach as a strategy in publishing publications

Background To explore the research areas, hotspots, and progress of meibomian gland dysfunction through bibliometrics. Methods Related publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2011 to 2020. VOSviewer1.6.16, Citespace.5.7.R2, and GraphPad Prism 8 were used to visualize the distribution of countries, research institutions, journals, authors, keywords, and annual publication numbers in this field. Results A total number of 716 relevant publications were retrieved. The United States and Keio University ranked the first among the countries and organizations with the most publications. Cornea, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and Ocular Surface were the top three journals with the highest publication counts and citations. The authors who contributed to this topic mainly formed three clusters which manifested the research areas, and the extracted keywords mainly formed four clusters which manifested the hotspots were explored. Conclusions The research areas and hotspots of meibomian gland dysfunction were as follow: (1) Pathogenesis or potential etiology of meibomian gland dysfunction; (2) Diagnosis of meibomian gland dysfunction; (3) Therapy of meibomian gland dysfunction and the International Workshop`s dedication to it; (4) Epidemiology of meibomian gland dysfunction.
