Increased performance of invasive plant species in their introduced range vs. their native range has been previously documented. However, performance differences among invasive populations have rarely been explored, despite this information being central to understanding the evolution of invasiveness as well as being a useful basis to inform management of invasive species. To examine variation in performance among populations of Rosa rugosa in its introduced range, and whether introduced populations perform better than native populations, we quantified growth and reproductive traits in five invasive populations in northwest Europe and two native and declining populations in China. Overall, we found that the introduced R. rugosa populations we sampled performed significantly better than the sampled native populations for growth and reproductive traits (2 to 4 fold increase). However, there was significant variation for most traits among the five invasive populations, demonstrating that some introduced populations we sampled were more successful invaders than others. Our findings provide a useful foundation for management of invasive R. rugosa in Europe, and support the recent call for more intra-species research in invasive species biology.

Fruit shape is a critical appearance quality in apple. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for apple fruit shape index (FSI) traits were previously mapped by our laboratory to linkage group 11 of the maternal parent in a cross population of 'Jonathan' 9 'Golden Delicious' using simple sequence repeat markers. In this study, QTLs for fruit length, diameter, and FSI were identified again using a high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genetic linkage map, and candidate genes associated with FSI were screened via whole-genome re-sequencing data for 'Jonathan' and 'Golden Delicious'. Fifteen QTLs, including four for fruit length, one for fruit diameter, and ten for FSI, were identified in three sampling years. Two overlapping year-stable QTL regions related to FSI were anchored on LG 11 of 'Jonathan'. One candidate gene (MDP0000135244) related to FSI in apple and encoding an LysM domain receptor-like kinase protein was predicted and verified in the segregated population. The nonsynonymous SNP (C11.6053728) of MDP0000135244 was present in 23 of 30 individuals with high FSI, demonstrating a close relationship between MDP0000135244 and FSI trait. These results will be useful for the application of marker-assisted selection for FSI trait in apple.

Fruit shape represents a key trait that consumers use to identify and select preferred cultivars, and although the manipulation of this trait is an opportunity to create novel, differentiated products, the molecular mechanisms regulating fruit shape are poorly understood in tree fruits. In this study, we have shown that ectopic expression of Malus domestica PISTILLATA (MdPI), the apple ortholog of the floral organ identity gene PISTILLATA (PI), regulates apple fruit tissue growth and shape. MdPI is a single‐copy gene, and its expression is high during flower development but barely detectable soon after pollination. Transgenic apple plants with ectopic expression of MdPI produced flowers with white sepals and a conversion of sepals to petals. Interestingly, these plants produced distinctly flattened fruit as a consequence of reduced cell growth at the basipetal position of the fruit. These altered sepal and fruit phenotypes have not been observed in studies using Arabidopsis. This study using apple has advanced our understanding of PI functions outside the control of petal and stamen identity and provided molecular genetic information useful for manipulating fruit tissue growth and fruit shape.
