Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci for Butter Content and Hardness in Cocoa Beans (Theobroma cacao L.)

Abstract: Cocoa butter is an important raw material for the chocolate, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The butter content and quality in cocoa beans are genetically controlled characteristics, and affect its commercial value and industrial applicability. In the present work, an F 2 population derived from the cross between the ICS-1 and Scavina-6 cocoa clones was used for molecular mapping. A linkage map was constructed based on amplified fragment length polymorphism, random amplified polymorphic DNA, and simpl… Show more

“…oryzae (Xoo) (Ronald et al 1992). Map-based cloning is the most commonly used method for cloning new genes (Araújo et al 2009). Until recently, map-based cloning in rice has relied heavily on the use of gel-based methods, which are both time consuming and hazardous to human health.…”

“…Today, 1259 SSRs and SNPs loci are mapped in the 10 cacao chromosomes. For many agronomic traits of importance in cacao breeding, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been mapped (Clement et al 2003, Faleiro et al 2006, Brown et al 2007, Araújo et al 2008. However, saturated maps on specific regions are still underway and the maps available are still based on a few crosses.…”

“…Theobroma cacao is a perennial, monoecious, tropical plant of great economic importance because its beans are used in the production of chocolate, cocoa butter, liquor and pulp (Araújo et al ., ; Cilas et al ., ; Silva et al ., ). Cacao is cultivated in tropical regions worldwide, including Central and South America, Africa, Asia and Oceania (Queiroz et al ., ).…”
