Mapping groundwater quality variables using PCA and geostatistics: a case study of Bajo Andarax, southeastern Spain

Abstract: A case study is presented for the application of statistical and geostatistical methods to the problem of estimating groundwater quality variables. This methodology has been applied to the investigation of the detrital aquifer of the Bajo Andarax (Almeria, Spain). The use of principal components analysis is proposed, as a first step, for identifying relevant types of groundwater and the processes that bring about a change in their quality. As a result of this application, three factors were obtained, which wer… Show more

“…The governing hydrochemical processes were interpreted through data reduction and classification; however factor analyses were performed to identify important factors contributing hydrochemical processes (Sanchez-Martoz et al 2001;Davis 2002;Jiang et al 2009). Factor analysis objective is to establish the associations between the physico-chemical variables of the waters and to note any correlations between them.…”

“…Multivariate statistics is used in this hydrogeochemical study to evaluate a large amount of data to determine patterns, tendencies and similarities between physicochemical parameters (Morell et al, 1996;Sanchez-Martos et al, 2001;Lee and Song, 2007;Nghia, 2008). The XLSTAT software was used for statistical assessments of the SFO hydrogeochemical data.…”
