Map-based mobile services

Abstract: This chapter gives a general introduction into map-based mobile services which are considered as value-added location-based services. Starting from an overview of digital map types, their rapidly growing affordances and required learning efforts, the natures and design constraints of offline screen maps, web maps and mobile maps are comparatively studied. The aspects of immediate usability are highlighted as a central thread drawing together the essential research challenges involved in the design process of u… Show more

“…The design of a mobile map suited for users' needs is a challenging task, and may require several trade-offs (Meng and Reichenbacher, 2005). With mobile 3D maps, the situation is further accentuated.…”

“…This means that a general-purpose navigation system must be able to integrate with different kinds of positioning technologies. Most of the literature on indoor pedestrian navigation [11], [12], [18], [21] put the main focus on how to obtain reliable and accurate positions by means of UWB, dead reckoning, WiFi positioning etc., whereas less effort is put into providing a well-structured and efficient navigation functionality, or efficient navigation interfaces. The PerPos [8] platform provides cloud services that, e.g., take care of providing the most accurate position possible, given the positioning hardware and the building conditions, as well as offering location model and route planning services.…”

“…The primary focus of the literature on indoor pedestrian navigation is on the positioning methods [11], [12], [18], [21]. These papers, although talking about navigation, are more about achieving accurate positions indoor by means of dead reckoning, WiFi, Particle filters and similar approaches.…”
