Manufacturing textured surfaces: State of art and recent developments

Abstract: Surface texturing and its influence on tribological systems performances represent one of the main research topics nowadays. Textures functionality is initially ensured by correct optimization of its geometrical parameters, but the influence of textures quality is not to be neglected. Therefore, a proper selection of fabrication methods appropriate for each individual application is imperative. The process of selection is somehow exhaustive due to abundance of parameters and selection criterions. Hence, this p… Show more

“…With the increasing development of advanced components, surfaces and their associated properties are recognised as the critical factor dominating function [31,174]. Consequently, to maximise the component functionality there has been a large focus on the component surfaces and designing the surface structures to optimise a particular surface-related function [16,23,99,125,125]. To support manufacturing of such surfaces, a measurement traceability and calibration infrastructure is essential to ensure product quality.…”

“…The current manufacturing advancements in the surface texturing techniques including photoetching, laser surface texturing and micro end milling, allow for the precise dimensional control of up to a few microns. Further, the process parameters and the bearing materials affect the geometric quality of the fabricated surface texture . The effect of surface texturing on improving the tribological performance can depend on shape, density, depth and pattern of dimples.…”

“…However, these are not the only parameters which influence the final behaviour of the contact since, e.g. the texturing method may affect the final quality …”
