Bibliometrics is a statistical technique used to measure aspects of academic production that contribute for developing sciences. The purpose of this article is to present research results highlighting in main works on frugal innovation. The research has been based in bibliometric theories, exploring bases to indicate main correlational areas, documents profiles and verify the level of growth these scientific documents. It was possible to generate visual density and Network maps by Vosviewer software, ranking of documents per authors and World ranking papers from Web of Science and Scopus bases. It was possible to identify and highlight main topics related to management area; keywords associated and related topics for this theme, also answering concepts presented by authors for frugal innovation.

Este artigo tem como objetivo principal apresentar as características da produção científica sobre inovação frugal publicadas na base ScienceDirect no período de 2013 a 2017. Para tanto, foram realizadas uma revisão bibliométrica e uma breve análise de conteúdo de 16 artigos que compõem o portfólio da revisão. A revisão contemplou os seguintes indicadores: quantidade de publicação por ano, principais autores, instituições e regiões mais presentes nas publicações, média de palavras-chave e referências. Os principais resultados mostraram que a inovação frugal, apesar de ser um tema contemporâneo e com produção acadêmica crescente, ainda não possui um conceito consolidado na literatura. A Índia se destacou como país predominante na produção acadêmica sobre o tema. Da análise de conteúdo concluiu-se que o interesse dos pesquisadores sobre o tema é bem diversificado com destaque para as seguintes abordagens: etapas para o desenvolvimento da inovação frugal; principais formas de difusão; inovações frugais voltadas para a sustentabilidade e redução dos impactos ambientais; utilização de
