Manufacturers’ Closed-Loop Orientation for Green Supply Chain Management

Abstract: Abstract:The concept of green supply chain management (GSCM) is still in its infancy and has been implemented only to a limited extent. Strategic orientation is an important factor affecting its implementation. No reliable and valid strategic orientation construct has been developed for greening a supply chain. This study proposes closed-loop orientation (CLO) as the appropriate strategic orientation to implement GSCM practices successfully and develops a valid measurement of CLO. Data collected from 296 Chine… Show more

“…Another challenge is related to the complexity of products and the geographical scope of the supply chain [26]. The regions involved in the supply chain are subject to several legal regulations [27]. Moreover, governments tend to offer different degrees of support, depending on the region, to the current linear business since regulations do not address the internalization of the externalities [28] and public procurement does not facilitate the purchase of sustainable products [29].…”

“…Although the Ellen MacArthur Foundation [31] also highlights the relevance of the collaborative platforms across sectors between businesses and policymakers as an enabler for the transition towards a circular economy, more efforts should be put in to engage the other stakeholders [28] and to establish coordination mechanisms in the supply chain [27].…”

“…GSCM encompasses product design, material sourcing and selection, manufacturing processes in addition to depreciation of the products [23]. Liu and Chang [24] used structural equation models for a sample of 296 Chinese manufacturers and found that both closed-loop operation and GSCM positively influence the environmental and economic performance of firms. Zhu and Sarkis [25] also suggested that there should be a more extensive approach for these practices in addition to classifying GSCM into internal environmental management, green purchasing, investment recovery, eco-design practices and cooperation with supply chain partners.…”
