Manufacture of Folded and Twisted Paper Yarn

Abstract: The tourist sector in Mauritius is aiming at welcoming 2 million tourists by the year 2015 and coming up with creative ideas and products branded with 'Made in Mauritius' to boost the country's craft sector. This project looks into the manufacture of paper-yarn. Different types of paper were cut into ribbons of varying widths and converted into yarn by two methods: twisting and folding. “…Paper is one of the main inputs of the paper printing industry. In the printing industry, papers are preferred depending on where they will be used, for example, high absorbency papers in books, low‐weight papers for posters to be used on exterior walls, antimicrobial and glossy paper on packaging etc 1‐3 . A paper should have a positive effect on the printability parameters of color, gloss, and surface smoothness as well as its quality.…”

“…The first paper spinning machines used the twisting method, and this process is still under development. The paper is moistened by water upon the twisting, so the paper must have sufficient wet strength to endure the spinning process [19]. In general, paper offers low porosity and high stiffness [11].…”

“…The use of paper as a raw material for yarn production has many advantages. Firstly, paper is a renewable and eco-friendly material made from cellulose (Chummun and Rosunee 2012). In addition, demand for paper is currently decreasing because many people now read the newspapers, pay bills, etc., via the Internet; this behavioural change has created overcapacities in the pulp and paper industry, inspiring searches for new business opportunities.…”

“…At the end of these processes, the fibre length is approximately 3.5 mm and the width is 16-35 µm. The cross-section can vary from round to oval (Chummun and Rosunee 2012;Park and Lee 2013). Hence, a paper is produced that can be processed into a yarn, which can then be manufactured into a textile fabric.…”
