Manual for Use of Montgomery® Laryngeal, Tracheal, and Esophageal Prostheses: Update 1990

Abstract: This manual is designed to instruct the surgeon, the nurse, and, directly or indirectly, the patient on the updated usage of prostheses involved with reconstructive surgery of the larynx, trachea, and esophagus. The silicone tracheal Safe-T-Tube has been modified in an attempt to prevent its being displaced posteriorly into the trachea. The silicone tracheal cannula can be used in place of a tracheotomy tube unless there is aspiration or positive pressure breathing is required. Its success with sleep apnea has… Show more

“…The basic devices, such as the finger cot and the rolled silastic sheet, are customised [19]. Over time, these devices have been largely replaced by the Aboulker stent [2], the Montgomery T-tube [43], the Healy-Montgomery paediatric T-tube and the Montgomery [46] or the Eliachar laryngotracheal stents [16]. However, these stents do not truly meet the aforementioned requirements for safe use without potential damage to the reconstructed airway.…”

“…T-tube introduced by Montgomery, provides a stable and physiologic airway to the patient and can be kept in place for long periods of time to follow up the progress of patients till the time decanulation can be considered [9]. It can be used primarily as a definitive treatment or in the management of inoperable conditions or as an adjunct after resection anastomosis till adequate healing is achieved [10][11][12][13].…”
