Mannich Reactions of Methoxythiophens

A homologous series of donor‐substituted oligothiophenes 5, 7, and 9 bearing pyrrolidino groups in the “outer” β‐positions were synthesized up to a quaterthiophene. The physical properties were investigated in dependence on the chain length of the conjugated system. Due to the substitution pattern, even the longer oligomers exhibit good film forming properties and could be electropolymerized to the corresponding donor‐substituted polythiophenes P5, P7, and P9, which promise a pure stereoregular structure. The electronic properties of both oligomers and polymers were found to be strongly dominated by the donor strength of the substituents.

A new series of poly(p‐diethynylbenzene) derivatives with trans structure and long‐conjugation side chains were synthesized. These polymers possess good solubility and thermal stability. The maximum absorptions and band gaps depend on the nature and number of the substituents. Third‐order nonlinear optical properties of these polymers were characterized with second‐order hyperpolarizability as large as ≈10–30 esu in the non‐resonant region.

ABSTRACf. The poly(3-alkylthiophenes) represent a new generation of conducting polymers, that exhibit both solution and melt processability. These properties open new possibilities for the utilization of conducting polymers in practical applications. Furtheonore, the solubility of these polymers enables the characterization of the physical and chemical structure in greater detail than hitherto have been possible. In this chapter we give a brief review of the synthetic routes to the poly(3-alkylthiophenes) as well as an overview of some of the recent results on the physical and chemical characterization of this class of materials. In this overview we include results on stability properties, transport properties, thermo-and solvatochromism. We also discuss some aspects of the utilization of the poly(3-alkylthiophenes) in applications.
