Mangrove Ecosystem Service Values and Methodological Approaches to Valuation: Where Do We Stand?

Abstract: Mangroves, seagrass meadows, and salt marshes, collectively termed "Blue Forests," are counted among the most valuable and productive coastal ecosystems on the planet. A recent literature review of the Blue Forest valuation research identified mangroves as the most frequently analyzed of these ecosystems, yet the literature demonstrates several deficits in terms of geographic location of studies, methods used to value the services, and most notably, a lack of valuation for cultural services. To better understa… Show more

“…Of these, 176 contained data on ecosystem service provision. This was further augmented by expert knowledge, in particular for assessing whether the bivalves were subject to harvest or provided cultural services, as this is commonly underrepresented in peer‐reviewed literature (Himes‐Cornell, Grose, & Pendleton, 2018).…”

“…For instance, use-values are usually elicited quantitatively using 'revealed preference methods' (e.g. market price, replacement cost, benefit transfer) for consumptive products traded in markets and are the most used valuation methods (Vo et al 2012;Himes-Cornell et al 2018). But non-marketed use-values and nonuse values are more difficult to assess using those same marketbased methods and 'stated preference methods' (e.g.…”

“…Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program (CHNEP) had large saltwater mangrove mortality areas with adjacent areas showing stress and potential expansion of the die-off to thousands of acres; management did not know the cause, but speculated that development was impacting mangrove health. Using published values for storm protection services provided by mangroves of up to $3116/ha [24], CHNEP's mangrove area potentially offers $80 million in protection from extreme events, while past studies have found that mature, healthy mangrove in the CHNEP provide $75,300/ha in annual fisheries production alone. With~700 square km of area, partitioning the management approach to fund appropriate mitigation measures was no small feat.…”
