Applying Spatial Mapping of Remotely Sensed Data to Valuation of Coastal Ecosystem Services in the Gulf of Mexico

Abstract: Spatial mapping of remote sensing data tends to be used less when valuing coastal ecosystem services than in other ecosystems. This research project aimed to understand obstacles to the use of remote sensing data in coastal ecosystem valuations, and to educate coastal stakeholders on potential remote sensing data sources and techniques. A workshop program identified important barriers to the adoption of remote sensing data: perceived gaps in spatial and temporal scale, uncertainty about confidence intervals an… Show more

“…The planning and management of the coastal environment requires careful assessment of both coastal evolutionary trends, such as marine and hydrodynamic weather phenomena, and the phenomena of increasing anthropic pressure connected to tourist use. This in order to integrate the planning and management of the coastal environment between risk mitigation and conscious use [27,28]. In this sense, the authors have identified the main instruments for the planning and coastal management of Villaputzu: The coastal use plan (LCP) and the SCI management plan (SCIMP) [29].…”

“…Seidel, Dourte, and Diamond [7] evaluate the use of remote sensing data in economic valuation using case studies across the Gulf of Mexico. Although remote sensing data is increasingly used for terrestrial ecosystem studies, applications for coastal and marine ecosystems have been limited.…”
