Mangrove forests in the Arabian Gulf are under continuous threat. To increase plantations of gray mangrove (Avicennia marina) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), 27 endophytic actinobacterial isolates obtained from mangrove roots were in vitro pre-screened to detect the polyamines (PAs) [putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm)]. We also determined the abilities of the endophytic PA-producing actinobacterial isolates in enhancing the growth of A. marina under greenhouse conditions. Although three highly PA-producing isolates were recovered from inside mangrove root tissues, Streptomyces mutabilis UAE1 constantly colonized root and stem inner tissues for 12 weeks, suggesting an endophytic association between this actinobacterial isolate and mangrove seedlings. When roots were inoculated with S. mutabilis, mangrove growth was remarkably enhanced under gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions. This was evident from the significant (P < 0.05) increases in dry weight and length of root (66.7 and 65.5%, respectively) and shoot (64.8 and 58.0%, respectively), number of branches (64.3%), total leaf area (40.2%), and photosynthetic pigments (54.5% chlorophyll a; 40.0% chlorophyll b; and 53.1% carotenoids) of mangrove compared to the PA-non-producing Streptomyces sp. or control treatment. Growth promotion in plants treated with S. mutabilis was also supported by significant (P < 0.05) elevations in the contents of mangrove in planta PAs, auxins, and cytokinins, accompanied by a decrease in abscisic acid levels. No difference was, however, detected in growth and amounts of PAs or any plant growth regulators (PGRs) in plants treated with or without the PA-non-producing isolate. Our findings indicate that plant growth parameters can be enhanced as a consequence of secretion of Put, Spd, and Spm by S. mutabilis resulting in regulation of endogenous PAs and other PGRs in mangrove tissues. This study is the first record that aims to improve sustainable agricultural management practices using plant growth promoting (PGP) actinobacteria, endophytic in mangrove tissues to promote mangrove growth under greenhouse conditions. Such research may allow this region to be a model to study the synergistic S. mutabilis–mangrove interactions and the future impacts on mangrove reforestation in the Arabian Gulf and elsewhere where mangrove forests are in threat.

Os mangues do litoral sul de Sergipe sobrevivem em meio à presença de tensores antropogênicos comprometedores da existência do ecossistema manguezal. Objetiva-se analisar os tensores antropogênicos que afetam os mangues Avicennia schaueriana Stapf. & Leech, Laguncularia racemosa (L.) Gaertn.f. e Rhizophora mangle L. e os níveis de vulnerabilidade decorrentes da tensão, no complexo estuarino Real-Piauí-Fundo/ Sergipe. Mediante adaptações na metodologia de Laranjeira e de Oliveira com Melo e Souza, foram determinadas características definidoras da transformação dos mangues. Os tensores foram observados sistematicamente nos estuários inferior, médio e superior, com base na definição prévia de atributos de tensão. Para avaliação conjunta dos tensores, foram determinados pesos e calculado o reescalonamento da vulnerabilidade. Os dados expressos em quadros, gráficos e mapa produzido no ArcGis, revelam: o estuário médio constitui a área de menor tensão antrópica; e o superior a área de maior vulnerabilidade, com a maior parte da faixa de mangues fora dos limites do polígono da Área de Proteção Ambiental do Litoral Sul, quando visualizados os limites da APA e as localidades da pesquisa. A sensibilidade dos estuários inferior e médio, que estão dentro da APA, foi classificada como elevada e moderada, respectivamente, revelando que os mangues do complexo estuarino estão sujeitos aos riscos das ações humanas. Mesmo dentro de um complexo estuarino, os mangues apresentam capacidade de resposta distinta aos tensores antropogênicos e chances significativas de desaparecimento. Analysis of Mangrove Anthropogenic Tensors in the Real- Piauí-Fundo Estuarine Complex, south of Sergipe, Brasil ABSTRACTThe mangroves on the south coast of Sergipe survive amid the presence of anthropogenic tensors that compromise the existence of the mangrove ecosystem. The objective is to analyze the anthropogenic tensors that affect the Avicennia schaueriana (Stapf & Leech), Laguncularia racemosa (L.) C.F. Gaertn and Rhizophora mangle (L.) and the levels of vulnerability resulting from tension, in the Real-Piauí-Fundo/ Sergipe estuarine complex. The tensors were systematically observed in the lower, middle and upper estuaries, based on the previous definition of tension attributes. For the joint assessment of the tensors, weights were determined and the rescheduling of the vulnerability was calculated. The data expressed in charts, graphs and maps produced in ArcGis, reveal: the average estuary constitutes the area with the lowest anthropogenic tension; and the upper one, the most vulnerable area, with most of the mangrove strip outside the limits of the polygon of the Environmental Protection Area of the South Coast, when viewing the APA limits and the research locations. The sensitivity of the lower and middle estuaries, which are within the APA, was classified as high and moderate, respectively, revealing that the mangroves of the estuarine complex are subject to the risks of human actions. In 2016, the French government adopted a law for biodiversity, setting an objective of protecting 55,000 hectares of mangroves. This objective is particularly important to French Guiana, which shelters almost 60% of French mangrove ecosystems, and where mangroves occupy three quarters of the coastline. The coast of French Guiana is also where issues associated with demographic and economic dynamics concentrate. There is thus a need to plan for an economic development that is compatible with the objective of protecting mangrove ecosystems. Ecosystem services (ES) assessment can support such decision-making, informing on the costs and benefits associated with alternative mangrove conservation strategies. While the many services provided by mangrove ecosystems are well documented worldwide, the extent to which these can be encountered in the specific case of French Guiana is currently only very partially known. Relying on the Fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) approach, we collected and compared the perception of multiple and heterogeneous groups of stakeholders, of the functioning of the mangrove social-ecological system at the scale of French Guiana. Results, allow to identify mangroves ES and threats particularly influenced by the high sedimentary dynamism of the shoreline. This generates two distinct components of the mangrove social-ecological system: mud banks where ecosystem services are spatially and temporally unstable, and associated with perceived constraints for key coastal activities, and estuarine mangroves where the ecosystem services usually described in the literature on mangroves can be found. Disservices associated with mangrove ecosystems were also identified as a key interaction. This can inform the research needs that should support sustainable development trajectories, fully accounting for the protection of French Guianese mangrove ecosystems.
