The Tuntang estuary is located in the coastal area of the Demak Regency, which has a considerable mangrove ecosystem potential. However, their persistence is degraded due to land conversion, deforestation, and climate change. Hence, to provide the basis for mangrove conservation in that area, it is essential to gain insight into the mangroves’ composition and structure. Vegetation data were obtained by using a quadratic transect survey method with plot sizes for categories of the tree (10x10 m), sapling (5x5 m), and seedling (2x2 m). The results showed that eleven true mangroves and three mangrove-associated species were found in the mangrove ecosystem of the Tuntang estuary. All true mangrove species are included in the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List of threatened species. The dominant species was Rhizophora mucronata, which showed the most significant important value index of each growth stage. The research area’s biodiversity and dominance index were categorized as very low, but the evenness index was relatively high. The standing structure in the reverse “J” shape is formed by the number of trees and regeneration ratios. The vulnerability to degradation level on density and dominance index parameters was low, while the diversity index parameter was classified as moderate, which displays a potential vulnerability to disturbances. This study highlights that conserving mangrove ecosystems on the coast around the Tuntang estuary is essential to defend the coastal area from abrasion and tidal flooding, which have been problems in the area for long periods.

Keberhasilan konservasi hutan rawa mangrove di Setapuk Besar belum diketahui apakah lebih terdorong oleh partisipasi anggota kelompok peduli pesisir atau sudah melibatkan bukan anggota. Masalah ini penting dianalisis untuk menentukan pilihan tipe co-manajemen konservasinya, setelah rehabilitasi hutan mangrove dianggap berhasil. Studi ini bertujuan menganalisis implikasi kehadiran kelompok peduli pesisir dan partisipasi komunitas terhadap pilihan tipe co-manajemen konservasi hutan mangrove. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan melalui wawancara terstruktur terhadap 90 responden, sedangkan alat analisisnya menggunakan metode deskriptif dan uji beda U-Mann Whitney. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa tingkat pemahaman dan partisipasi anggota kelompok peduli pesisir secara signifikan mempunyai kualifikasi yang lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan bukan anggota, sehingga ini menunjukkan masih tingginya gap yang terjadi. Perbedaan pemahaman dan partisipasi ditunjukkan oleh tingginya kemampuan anggota kelompok dalam menganalisis, menginterpretasikan, memahami kondisi lingkungan, dan juga kepeduliannya terhadap kegiatan konservasi. Keberhasilan konservasi yang masih bertumpu pada partisipasi anggota kelompok perlu terus ditingkatkan dengan memperbaiki kapasitas manajemennya, sehingga tingkat partisipasi bisa semakin luas melibatkan sebagian besar anggota komunitas. Dalam kaitan ini, mempertimbangkan telah berperannya kelompok peduli pesisir namun masih adanya gap pemahaman dan partisipasi, maka pilihan bentuk co-manajemen konservasi yang dianggap cocok adalah tipe kooperatif.

Mangrove resource that people often visit, has characteristics that are quite vulnerable to environmental disturbance. Maroon Mangrove Edupark is a mangrove resource in Semarang, located close to Maroon beach and Ahmad Yani International Airport. The presence of mangroves in Maroon Mangrove Edupark, is expected to protect Maroon coastal area and the airport from the coastal disaster, as well as to make it as a new sustainable ecotourism site. This study assessed the benefits of mangrove resource in Maroon Mangrove Edupark according to visitor perception, and provide the economic valuation toward mangrove plantation in there. Economic valuation measurement employed was TCM (Travel Cost Method). The economic surplus value per individual per visit is Rp 173.010,00. The value indicates the benefits of environmental services greater than the cost incurred. Besides that, only 35,54% of mangrove forest has been utilized. For optimalizing the values, increasing the number of mangroves were planted along with maintenance should be done.
