This study aims to examine the leadership of the kyai in Pesantren Salâfiyah Cidahu Pandeglang. It specifically explored the leadership of the kyai and its role in internalizing nationalism values for students in pesantren. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method. The data were obtained through interviews, observation and documentation. The results showed that the leadership of the kyai has played a role in internalizing a spirit of nationalism for the students. The process of internalizing the spirit of nationalism was carried out through giving advice and exemplary, book recitation activities, baḥṡ al-masâ'il, community service, entrepreneurial activities, organizational activities, leadership training, maintaining traditions, and democracy-related activities. Lack of the students' motivation to learn and the limited facilities and infrastructure were the obstacles in nurturing the values of nationalism. To solve the obstacles, kyai provided motivation for the students, built the students' confidence and self-confidence, and established network with the society and government.

This paper explored the life of social stratification of the Madurese society and the usage of Bhasa Madhura (Madurese language) by using two theories, namely Talcott Parsons' structural functionalism theory and stratification theory by Paul B. Horton. The research method used in this research was a qualitative descriptive method. The authors based this research on literature review and empirical data by observation and interviews. Through data analysis, the author uncovered several findings. First, the social stratification styles of the Madurese society in the context of status, class, and occupation was divided into three types, namely the levels of the oreng kenek, pongghaba, and parjaji communities. Second, the social stratification styles from religious context were divided into six types, including keyae, ajji, modin, bindharah, santre, and banne santre. Third, the usage of Bhasa Madhura in the Madurese social stratification was divided into different honorifics, from the highest and most polite honorific to the lowest or impolite honorific. Besides that, the usage of abhasa (enggi-bunten) styles and ta'abhasa (enja'-iye) styles also occur in some aspects of Madurese conditional and contextual life. The findings of this study could be used to advise the preservation of Bhasa Madhura in the social stratification realm.

Kharisma yang dimiliki kyai merupakan salah satu power yang dapat menciptakan pengaruh dalam masyarakat. Ada dua dimensi yang perlu diperhatikan, yaitu: Pertama, kharisma yang diperoleh oleh seseorang kyai secara given, seperti postur tubuh besar, suara yang keras dan mata yang tajam serta adanya ikatan genealogis denga kyai kharismaik sebelumnya, Kedua, kharisma yang diperoleh melalui kemampuan dalam penguasaan terhadap pengetahuan keagamaan disertai moralitas dan kepribadian yang saleh, dan kesetiaan menyantuni masyarakat. Dalam dinamika pesantrem, predikat kyai yang berhubungan dengan suatu gelar yang diberikan oleh masyarakat kepada seorang ahli agama Islam yang memiliki ilmu pengetahuan mendalam tentang ajaran agama Islam atau menjadi pemimpin pesantren, kini telah terkontaminasi oleh pengaruh globalisasi yang mampu menghadirkan gejolak atau konflik, baik secara individu maupun kelompok. Dari hasil yang diperoleh, transformasi representasi identitas kepemimpinan kyai dalam hubungan atasan dan bawahan kini mulai terkikis dengan adanya transformasi globalisasi yang masuk ke dalam dunia pesantren. Pergeseran etika dalam hubungan atasan dan bawahan ditunjukkan dengan bentuk transformasi kepemimpinan yang terlihat dengan bagaimana cara kyai menginstruksikan bawahannya dengan tidak menggunakan tangan kanan sebagi penunjuknya. Hal lain juga digambarkan pada tingkah laku seorang kyai dengan semena-mena memerintahkan bawahannya dengan nada suara tinggi sehingga terkesan “makon” dalam bentuk perintah.
