Managing Opioid Use Disorder and Co-Occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Veterans

Abstract: Support and safety measures are essential for Veterans admitted to acute psychiatric units with co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and opioid use disorder (OUD) to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. A human patient simulator was used to train clinicians to recognize opioid withdrawal symptoms. Clinicians were educated to assess for opioid withdrawal symptoms using the Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale. Knowledge was evaluated via pre/posttest. All participants' (N = 12) posttest scores improve… Show more

“…In simulation-based education (SBE), students can be exposed to low-frequency, high-risk encounters that they may not experience at their varied clinical sites. Many studies have demonstrated that SBE improved nursing learners' knowledge, attitudes, therapeutic communication, and confidence in recognizing and managing health problems 2–4. One health care area that SBE can address is comorbidity, the presence of 2 or more health conditions in the same person at the same time, which poses significant health concerns in medical, community, and primary care 3.…”
