An online survey of graduate-student instructors of undergraduate courses (N ϭ 156) explored their teaching values, teaching approaches, teaching practices, career teaching expectations, and experience of receiving support as teachers. Our aim was to uncover what graduate students value as important for teaching excellence and whether those values are expressed in their teaching practices. Participants most valued ethics and diversity and higher-order thinking skills in their teaching along with instructor expertise. Of these 3 domains, the first 2 aligned with endorsements of a conceptual-change, student-focused approach to teaching (r ϭ .36 and r ϭ .28, respectively). Despite this, most participants reported making use of non-student-centered teaching practices, such as lecturing (93.6%) or assigning textbook readings (84.0%), rather than studentfocused practices, like using small-group discussions (48.0%). However, when some student-centered practices were adopted, there were links to endorsements of studentfocused values: Assigning popular press articles (19.2%) correlated with valuing ethics and diversity (r ϭ .29), whereas structuring writing assignments to be collaborative (28.8%) correlated with valuing higher-order thinking skills (r ϭ .27). Regarding career teaching expectations and perceptions of teaching support, two thirds of participants expected teaching to be part of their career responsibilities, but fewer than half believed they received as much support as needed. The findings indicate further need for training and support to better ensure that graduate-student instructors adopt evidence-based teaching practices that align with their student-focused teaching values and approaches.

Diversity in Academic Laryngology: An Evaluation of Academic Advancement and Research Productivity

Background: Diversity within the medical profession with respect to sex and racial minorities has been shown to have a positive effect on health and healthcare. Characterization of a field is key to evaluating trends and the advancement of diversity in an otolaryngology subspecialty.Study Design: Observational study. Methods: A comprehensive list of all the academic laryngologists was compiled from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited otolaryngology residency programs in 2020. The last 20 past presidents of the American Laryngological Association (ALA) and American Broncho-Esophogological Association (ABEA) were analyzed. Academic rank and years in practice were determined from departmental websites, with online search tools used as secondary resources. The h-index was utilized as a measure of research productivity. Regression analysis was performed to analyze these variables.Results: There are 184 academic laryngologists in the 124 programs. The majority of the population is Caucasian 76.6% (141/184), followed by Asian 16.3% (30/184), African American 4.34% (8/184), and then Hispanic 1% (2/184). There are 47 full professors with 83% Caucasian, 14.1% Asian, and 2.1% African American and 91.5% male and only 8.5% female. Past ALA presidents were 90% male and for the ABEA 75% male. H-index revealed a statistically significant difference between Caucasian and African American colleagues [P value (<.0005)].Conclusions: Minorities are disproportionately underrepresented in laryngology. Women are less likely to be in leadership roles in laryngology and become full professors. Laryngology lags behind other surgical specialties in the representation of minorities and women. Continued efforts should be made to increase diversity in the field of laryngology, especially in regard to underrepresented minorities.

Introducción: En un país multicultural como Colombia, la etnoeducación es un importante elemento en la educación médica, pues favorece la calidad de vida de minorías étnicas a partir de potencialidades comunitarias, prácticas, hábitos, experiencias y enfoques que promuevan el sentido global de la salud. El objetivo de este artículo fue realizar una revisión narrativa sobre los antecedentes de la etnoeducación y su impacto en la salud. El desarrollo de competencias interculturales en los estudiantes del área de la salud permitiría a los futuros profesionales desempeñar su rol con adecuada pertinencia cultural, respetando los valores, tradiciones e historia de las comunidades. Temas tratados: A nivel mundial, la etnoeducación ha sido un aspecto relevante, organizaciones internacionales han trabajado durante décadas para su implementación. A nivel nacional, se han creado diversos instrumentos normativos y reglamentación para la implementación de la etnoeducación, sin embargo, cerca del 86% de las poblaciones étnicas no cuentan con acceso a educación que cumpla con los principios establecidos. La importancia de la etnoeducación se ha evidenciado en varios países, brindando resultados positivos como la disminución de la morbimortalidad con actividades educativas de promoción de la salud y prevención de la enfermedad. Para ello, es crucial que las acciones planteadas se integren con las percepciones culturales de las comunidades. Conclusión: Existen muchos lineamientos a nivel local, nacional e internacional, sin embargo, la etnoeducación continúa siendo un reto. Es necesario aumentar los esfuerzos para que la etnoeducación logre los objetivos que están planteados desde el punto de vista teórico.
