In an attempt to deal with challenges such as increased competition, the global economic crisis, and the pandemic crisis, cultural organizations increasingly tend to adopt business theories and tools. The present paper addresses this issue in an industry that is not very frequently discussed, that of orchestra, using Orchestra Mobile as the case study. Based on literature review and interviews, and with reference to some of the latest, innovative approaches to management and strategy supported by digital technologies, the paper examines how this new entry in the industry (in 2010): (i) not attached to a concert hall (and, therefore, dependent on others) and with no state funding, survived against established organizations of global recognition, who were attached to prestigious concert halls, and enjoyed strong funding on the part of the state; (ii) with no external support, succeeded within the peak of the global economic crisis; (iii) decided long before the pandemic crisis to operate mostly at a distance, based on geographically dispersed members and collaborators; and, more importantly, (iv) challenged the rules of an industry that were formed in the 18th and 19th centuries and have not been (substantially) challenged ever since. The conclusions on the complex relationship of “sustainability-innovation-digital technologies” could be of benefit to a wide range of cultural organizations and entrepreneurs.

A szimfonikus zenekarok (törvényi meghatározása: 1. online melléklet) üzleti modellje témakör egy újszerű kutatási terület; alig néhány kapcsolódó publikáció található a témában. Kutatásunk célja, hogy megtegye a kezdeti lépéseket, illetve hangsúlyozza a vezetéstudomány korszerű eszközeinek alkalmazhatóságát és a menedzsment fontosságát a kultúra területén is. Elemzésünk során az üzleti modellezés eszköztárát alkalmazzuk, üzletimodell-vászon segítségével. Az elemzés struktúráját tekintve először az adott zenekar pénzügyi helyzetét mutatjuk be, majd pedig a tevékenységeit, célrendszerét, ugyanis az anyagi feltételek döntően meghatározzák a lehetőségeket. A részletes vizsgálatokat megelőzően áttekintjük a XXI. századi "elvárásokat", illetve a KULTÚRAMENEDZSMENT A DIGITÁLIS KORBAN-ÖT ÉLENJÁRÓ SZIMFONIKUS NAGYZENEKAR ÜZLETI MODELLJE CULTURAL MANAGEMENT IN THE DIGITAL AGE-BUSINESS MODELS OF FIVE LEADING SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRAS SZABÓ ZSOLT ROLAND-SZEDMÁK BORBÁLA A kutatás egy újszerű terület feltárásának kezdeti lépéseit teszi meg, valamint az üzleti szemlélet fontosságát mutatja be a művészetek területen. A szerzők az elméleti összefoglalást követően a zeneipari trendeket és a XXI. századi szimfonikus zenekarokkal szemben támasztott igényeket vizsgálják meg, majd pedig a Berlini Filharmonikusok, a London Symphony Orchestra, a San Francisco Symphony, a Budapesti Fesztiválzenekar, végül pedig a Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar működését állítják kutatásuk fókuszába. A zenekarok hasonló missziót eltérő üzleti modellekkel valósítanak meg. A zenekarok közötti legnagyobb különbség a finanszírozásukra vezethető vissza: míg az amerikai zenekar piaci alapon működik, addig az európaiak esetében jelentős a közpénzből történő támogatás. A vizsgált zenekarok felismerték, hogy napjaink gyorsan változó világában egy üzleti modell sem örökérvényű: igyekeznek a fogyasztók változó igényeire reagálni és a technológia adta lehetőségeket minél nagyobb mértékben kihasználni. Following a theoretical summary, the authors examine trends in the music industry and the expectations set for a 21st century symphony orchestra, and then focus on the operation of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and, later, the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok. The orchestras have similar missions, but they use different business models.
