Management of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (SCCEDs) in dogs with diamond burr debridement and placement of a bandage contact lens

Abstract: Objective  To describe the outcome of canine spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (SCCED) treated with diamond burr debridement (DBD) and bandage contact lens placement (BCL). Animal studied  Forty eyes of 36 dogs presenting to a single private practice. Procedures  A retrospective review of medical records was performed. Cases were eligible for inclusion if they were newly diagnosed with SCCED by a veterinary ophthalmologist and treated with DBD/BCL. All patients received a complete ocular examinati… Show more

“…48 In these spontaneous superficial chronic corneal erosions, physical methods to disrupt the basement membrane, such as with diamond burr debridement, are required. 49 It would appear that use of CMHA-S can be valuable as a supplement to such ophthalmic treatments but not instead of them.…”

“…6 The use of a diamond burr (Fig 7) for debridement and penetration into the stromal layer may also be used successfully to treat these ulcers. 7 Healing of the ulcer takes two to three weeks, but normal adhesion complexes are not formed until at least a year after ulceration. 6 Bandage contact lens use is advocated in many instances to promote healing time and patient comfort.…”

“…In this study, the epithelial debridement was performed with a diamond burr unit, used for removing the nonadherent epithelial tissue in the management of spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects in dogs and horses. 32,33 Genotype T4 is the most commonly found in the environment and also the cause of AK.…”
