Purpose This study aims to compare two national dementia plans and analyse the approach of each state to the issue. Design/methodology/approach Comparative analysis, legal analysis, policy analysis Findings Although research is central to both plans, the practical implementation of the Russian and UK plans differs. The Russian action plan on dementia is advisory in nature and does not propose specific programmes for research funding. Two plans have different approach to the role of education and risk factors. Research limitations/implications Lack of information on Russian regional strategies does not allow to compare regional differences between two countries. Originality/value This study illustrates several weak points in the UK and Russian dementia policies, which should be addressed to tackle the dementia problem in both countries.

Today, there is no reliable pharmacological correction of dementia, despite its high prevalence worldwide. The clinical presentation of Alzheimer's disease at one or another stage is accompanied by neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs) in addition to cognitive defect. The intensity and range of NPDs are different. The possibilities of drug therapy for NPDs are demonstrated. The role of akatinol memantine in correcting a number of psychological and behavioral disorders is highlighted. Biological, psychological, social, and environmental factors are identified among those that contribute to or provoke the development of NPDs. Knowledge of the triggers of mental disorders makes it possible to prevent and thereby reduce or eliminate NPDs. Special emphasis is laid on the patient-caregiver relationship. In recent years, non-pharmacological interventions have been increasingly used as priority-line therapy for NPDs. There are data on main methods for non-pharmacological correction and on the efficiency of their application.

Despite progress made in laboratory methods, genetic studies, and modern neuroimaging, the diagnosis of diseases that cause dementia makes difficulties. The review presents an update on the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). It discusses the issues of symptomatic and pathogenetic treatments and combination therapy for AD. The efficacy of memantine (akatinol memantine) and the expediency of its use at different stages of the disease in patients with AD are noted. Non-pharmacological treatments for this disease, including physical activity and cognitive training, are considered.
