O câncer de esôfago apresenta altas taxas de mortalidade, podendo ser dividido em epidermoide ou escamoso e em adenocarcinoma. O diagnóstico geralmente é tardio e seus principais sintomas são disfagia e perda de peso. Predomina no sexo masculino e tem tanto influência hereditária quanto ambiental. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar o panorama do câncer de esôfago nas regiões do Brasil nos últimos cinco anos, correlacionando dados importantes envolvendo número de internações, faixa etária, sexo, número de óbitos, taxa de mortalidade, gasto total e média de permanência hospitalar, além de avaliar características culturais de determinadas regiões e outros fatores de risco a fim de concluir se a doença se encaminha para um melhor controle na atualidade. Para isso foi realizada uma coleta de dados no DATASUS. Confirmando os dados já existentes a região Sul mostrou-se a mais afetada pela doença, com o maior número de internações considerando a proporção populacional, porém, obteve a menor taxa de mortalidade, sendo as maiores do norte e centro-oeste. O sexo mais acometido foi o sexo masculino e a faixa etária de maior incidência foi a de 50 a 79 anos. Por esse motivo, o rastreamento da doença precisa ser melhorado, sobretudo na faixa etária mais acometida a fim de possibilitar um diagnóstico precoce, assim como é necessário que o estímulo seja dado para que, com a modificação dos hábitos de vida, sua incidência diminua. Esophageal cancer is a significant global health challenge, characterized by its aggressive nature and high mortality rates. The disease disproportionately affects males and ranks among the leading causes of cancerrelated deaths worldwide. Alarming projections indicate that the prevalence of esophageal cancer is expected to surge by approximately 140% by the year 2025. This trend starkly contrasts with the anticipated decline in incidence observed for many other types of cancers. The cancer manifests primarily in two major subtypes: esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, each with distinct epidemiological and biological characteristics. This review provides an in-depth exploration of the risk factors, anatomy, clinical presentation, diagnosis, staging, prognosis, treatment modalities, recurrence, advancements, and emerging therapies in esophageal cancer. Additionally, preventive and early detection strategies are discussed, focusing on primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention approaches. A comprehensive understanding of esophageal cancer is vital for formulating effective management strategies and improving patient outcomes.

IntroductionOesophageal discontinuity remains a challenge for thoracic and foregut surgeons globally. Whether arising emergently after catastrophic oesophageal or gastric disruption or arising in the elective setting in the case of staged reconstruction for esophagectomy or long gap atresia in the paediatric population, comprehensive review of this patient population remains unexplored within the surgical literature.The goal of this scoping review is to map the landscape of literature exploring the creation and takedown of cervical oesophagostomy with the intent to answer four questions (1) What are the primary indications for oesophageal discontinuity procedures? (2) What are the disease-specific and healthcare utilisation outcomes for oesophageal discontinuity procedures? (3) What is the primary indication for reversal procedures? (4) What are the disease-specific and healthcare utilisation outcomes for reversal procedures?MethodsThis review will follow the Arksey and O’Malley (2005) framework for scoping reviews. Paediatric (<18 years old) and adult (>18 years old) patients, who have received a cervical oesophagostomy in the context of a gastrointestinal discontinuity procedure or those who have had reversal of a cervical oesophagostomy, will be included for analysis. We will search MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases for papers from 1990 until 2023. Interventional trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies, reviews, case series and qualitative study designs will be included. Two authors will independently review all titles, abstracts and full texts to determine which studies meet the inclusion criteria.Ethics and disseminationNo ethics approval is required for this review. Results will be disseminated through scientific presentations and relevant conferences targeted for researchers examining upper gastrointestinal/foregut surgery.Registration detailsThis protocol is registered with Open Science Framework (osf.io/s3b4g).
