Management of afatinib-induced stomatitis

Abstract: Abstract. Severe stomatitis may lead to the need to interrupt or discontinue cancer therapy and, thus, may affect control of the primary disease. Stomatitis may also increase the risk of local and systemic infection and significantly affects the quality of life and the cost of care. The present study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two traditional herbal medicines in controlling treatment-induced stomatitis in a small cohort of lung cancer patients treated with afatinib. All patients who were treated… Show more

“…Chamomile ( Matricaria recutita ) is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional medicine for its anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory actions (Gomes et al, 2018 ), which seems to be a promising alternative for the treatment of 5-fluorouracil-induced oral mucositis and recurrent aphthous stomatitis (Seyyedi et al, 2014 ; Gomes et al, 2018 ). Aznol mouthwash combined with chamomile extract and Hangeshashinto, alleviates stomatitis in a small cohort of lung cancer patients treated with afatinib (Kato et al, 2017 ). Aloe vera , an herbal medicine in tropical area, has been used to treat skin disorders with anti-bacterial and wound-healing effects.…”

“…A total of 7 articles were read in full, and of these, 6 met the inclusion criteria after all stages of search selection and refinement, according to a flowchart based on the PRISMA model (Figure 1) (Moher et al, 2009). In the last refinement step, the study of Kato et al (2017) was excluded, because of the management of stomatitis mediated by tyrosine kinase inhibitors. A secondary active search was performed and 24 studies were included to complement the theoretical foundation.…”

“…EGFR-TKIs are generally maintained for grades 1 and 2. They are temporarily stopped for grade 3 until stomatitis or mucositis improves to grade 2, after which it is resumed at 50% of the initial dose, then increased if symptoms do not worsen [77].…”
