Management of adult spontaneous spondylodiscitis and its rising incidence

Abstract: Evidence suggests that the incidence of spondylodiscitis is on the rise. A review of our case series has demonstrated the effectiveness of intravenous antibiotic therapy. While no official guidance exists for when to switch from intravenous to oral antibiotics, our study shows that CRP at 1 month is >30mg/l and we recommend 6 weeks of intravenous therapy, followed by 6 further weeks of oral therapy.

“…In the case of spinal epidural abscess, neurological deficits also typify the classical presenting symptomatology but imply advanced disease. [10][11][12] However, the overall incidence is proportionally higher in older than in younger patients and is increasing. 1,2,5,7,8 Rates of general infection and sepsis increase with age 9 and also when considering spinal infections.…”

“…When the literature is examined; there are studies reporting that the incidence of spondylodiscitis has increased and accordingly the intravenous antibiotics have been used (22). However, the rational use of drugs is important, and it is also important to apply the right drug at the right time.…”

“…Spontaneous infectious spondylodiscitis (SIS), caused by the hematogenous spread of bacteria, is a relatively rare disease. However, a rise in the incidence of SIS has recently been noticed due to increasing life expectancy, use of endovascular devices, diabetes mellitus, and HIV [1, 2]. …”
