Management Goals for Conserving White Sturgeon in the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Basin

Abstract: Management objectives for long-lived species are difficult to define as many taxa have delayed maturity and variable recruitment. White Sturgeon Acipenser transmontanus is an example of a species with a complex life history that complicates long-term status monitoring and establishment of management objectives. Historically, White Sturgeon in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River basin have been monitored by tracking the abundance of age-15 individuals as outlined by the Central Valley Project Improvement Act. “…Although winter mortality of Apache Trout has not been studied, two age and growth studies have been conducted. In upper Big Bonito Creek (mean July temperature = 12.8°C), the mean length at age 1 was 41.5 mm TL (SD = 6.7) from 1970 to 1975 (Harper 1976), whereas in the lower East Fork White River (mean July temperature = 13.6°C) the mean length at age 1 was 55.6 mm TL (SD = 9.7) from 2009 to 2016 (Ulaski et al 2020). Mortality of age-0 trout in their first winter has been shown to be higher where temperatures are colder and growth is slower (Meyer and Griffith 1997).…”

“…The largest North American sturgeon, the white sturgeon ( Acipenser transmontanus ), inhabits coastal regions and large river systems along the West Coast of Canada and the United States. Anthropogenic impacts on white sturgeon such as overharvesting, pollution, habitat alteration and dam construction has sparked an increase in recovery efforts and research for the conservation of this species 3 . The large commercial production of sturgeon in North America 4 6 —a result of decades of research on sturgeon reproductive biology and embryology—positions white sturgeon as an ideal model for developing advanced breeding technologies for conservation aquaculture initiatives 7 10 .…”
