Managed intra-party democracy

Abstract: The question of how party leaders are selected has recently, and belatedly, come under systematic comparative scrutiny. If it is the location of intra-party power that interests us, however, it might be that some of the more observable indicators in such processes, such as the identity of the selectorate, are not actually the most revealing ones. Using a delegation perspective, we thus present a framework for analysing prior steps in leader selection and relate it to various ideal-typical constellations of int… Show more

“…by e-voting. Leadership literature focuses rather on mechanisms of their selection and election such as primaries and the respective voting technique (Aylott & Bolin, 2016;Chiru, et al 2015;Chiru & Gherghina, 2017) or the instrumentalization of primaries towards party membership (Astudillo & Detterbeck, 2018). For candidates and leaders, web-based communication technologies also provide a considerable and nowadays crucial channel for campaigning and relationship management.…”

“…There are strong substantive and methodological reasons for such an emphasis. At the same time, it has been increasingly acknowledged that the preselection phase of leader selection—that is, the process prior to an actual decision by the “selectorate,” the organ with the formal right to appoint a leader—is often just as important, perhaps more so, for understanding the outcome (Allern & Karlsen, 2014; Aylott & Bolin, 2017, 2021, p. 55; Ennser‐Jedenastik & Müller, 2014, p. 68). Even when leader selection occurs entirely as party rules stipulate, the crucial decisions may have already been made—perhaps formally and transparently, but sometimes informally and behind the scenes—by others, before the selectorate enters stage, and possibly even before the position of leader has become vacant.…”

“… 9. We only identified those candidate selection processes as primaries in which the selectorate could choose between at least two candidates. If only one candidate was seeking the nomination of her party, it is likely that the candidate was designated by the party elite (Aylott and Bolin, 2016). See Table A1 in the Online Appendix for an overview on the characteristics of the primary elections covered in the analysis. …”
