Sanitation acceptance is unlikely if user priorities are not addressed. However, sanitation systems 13 are commonly implemented, especially in resource-limited communities, without incorporating 14 local context. Understanding sanitation systems' abilities to address different priorities will further 15 inform technology selection processes. Therefore, a protocol was created to identify priorities and measure how well sanitation systems address them, based upon their importance to a community. This protocol was applied to 20 community-based sanitation systems in India. Overall, 52 sanitation and 40 community priorities were identified; most, along with their relative importance, were case-specific and not yet identified in literature. Existing sanitation systems poorly addressed priorities. Nonfunctional systems addressed the fewest, but, if use and maintenance were improved, they had the potential to address priorities almost as well as functional systems.Resource recovery systems addressed the most priorities, but there was usually minimal benefit to adding all three resources to an existing system; biogas and water had greater potential to address more priorities than compost. This priority addressment protocol can help identify the most appropriate technologies and strategies to improve technology development and success. 26

This book is based on an ethnological study of Swedish women’s everyday drug use. A queer phenomenological perspective, paying specific attention to class and gender, is used to analyse the accounts of twelve women aged 25–65 years. The book takes into account the central and increasing role of psychoactive substances in contemporary everyday life, and explores the women’s paths and considerations in relation to their use of drugs. The women in the study use different kinds of stigmatised substances in markedly different ways, and this provides access to perspectives on everyday life from somewhat queer, but not uncommon, angles.The book further problematises how gender and class affect the directions and experiences of lives lived under the effect of drugs, in relation to cultural and societal conceptions of drugs, drug use and people who use drugs. It explores themes based on respondents’ discussions about topics such as stigma, happiness, children, the body, gifts, the drug market, medication, sickness and health. To do this, the book first provides a detailed, contextualising background to drug use in Sweden and the Western world, based on an interdisciplinary weaving together of research and cultural media representations. It provides the reader with historical, sociological, criminological, pharmacological, medical, political, cultural and ethnographic takes on and reflections about the role of drugs and people who use drugs from an intersectional perspective, with a specific focus on class and gender.

Women’s Drug Use in Everyday Life

This background chapter sets the scene for the ethnographic study of Swedish women who use drugs (Part II of this book). It reviews historical and contemporary research on, and cultural representations of, drugs, paying specific attention to class and gender. How drugs first came into use in the Western world is examined under the heading Drug Laws and Drug Culture, and from there how they spread and how different substances and preparations came to be regarded from a legal and moral perspective. Why is alcohol not obviously perceived as a drug, and what roles do class and gender play in the laws and moral positions related to intoxication? Drugs and Women focuses on the legal market for controlled medicines and its connection to women. Why do women use more medicines but fewer illicit drugs than men? This is related to how women’s drug use has been constructed historically, and how the effects of different substances can be related to gender and class. In 1968, the Narcotics Penalty Act came into force in Sweden, and from then onwards, certain drugs became more strictly regulated. The fourth section, Sweden’s Drug Problem from the 1960s Onwards, examines how this happened and explains that illness and social deviation have been two influential perspectives on how drug use is viewed, with roots extending far back in history. This is reflected in the remarkable gap between drug policy and drug research in Sweden since the 1980s, during which period repressive policies have been fiercely debated. The last section, Qualitative Research on People who Use Drugs, looks into studies based on fieldwork and interviews with people who use drugs, especially women. The majority of such studies, and drug research in general, focus on men and on socially marginalised people who use drugs. In this book, I argue that such a focus helps to shape the understanding of drugs and drug use in Sweden. When linked to marginalised people only, moral condemnation of drugs and drug use that builds on that research will be directed towards a specific group of people, rather than particular substances and their use.
