Mammals, Volta Grande Environmental Unity, Triângulo Mineiro, states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Abstract:The Volta Grande Environmental Unity represents one of the few remnants of Cerrado protected by a reserve in the Triângulo Mineiro region, municipalities of Conceição das Alagoas (19°55' S, 48°23' W) and Miguelópolis (20°12' S, 48°03' W), in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, respectively. The mammalian fauna of this reserve was inventoried between 2003 and 2004 to generate estimates about taxonomic composition, richness, and abundance of species. A sampling effort of 832 trapping-nights result… Show more

“…Studies carried out in different areas of the Cerrado biome have recorded diversities of medium-sized to large terrestrial mammal ranging from 10 to 39 species (Bocchiglieri et al 2010, Gomes et al 2015, Leite et al 2016, Moreira et al 2008, Schneider, 2000, Silveira et al 2003Trolle et al 2007). Considering the greatest diversity yet reported (n = 39; Schneider 2000), our study detected around 40% of the medium-sized to large terrestrial mammals recorded in the Cerrado of Brazil.…”

“…Although some other studies report equally modest numbers of bat species found in some cerrado areas (see Table 2 e.g. (Moreira et al 2008) such low richness seems to be more an effect of relatively small sampling effort. The fact that we also only captured phyllostomid bats is expected with mist nets.…”

“…Á guas Emendadas Ecological Station, in the Federal District, with 11,000 ha, shows similar species richness (Marinho-Filho et al 1998) to Serra do Facã o region. Other studies found between 24 and 93 species for areas of different sizes and locations in the Brazilian cerrado (Mares et al 1989, Schneider 2000, Moreira et al 2008, Pereira & Geise 2009 (Table 2).…”

“…found in the Formosa MTA represents approximately 62% of the medium-and large-sized species recorded in all the Cerrado range (Marinho-Filho et al, 2002;Paglia et al, 2012) and is higher than the richness found in the three other protected areas located in the Federal District combined (N ¼ 24; Juarez, 2008). Other studies carried out in the Cerrado reported species richness between 15 and 29 species (Alves, 2014;Bocchiglieri, Mendonc¸a, & Henriques, 2010;Bruna et al, 2010;Rocha & Dalponte, 2006;Rodrigues et al, 2002;Lessa, Alves, Lena, & Barreto, 2012;Moreira et al, 2008;Ribeiro & Melo, 2013). However, the species accumulation curve does not show an asymptotic tendency, indicating that the species richness in the Formosa MTA should be even higher.…”
