Malignant melanomas on head/neck and foot: differences in time and latitudinal trends in Norway

Abstract: Comparisons of time trends and latitudinal trends of the incidence rates of CMM on head/neck and on foot indicate that solar radiation plays a role in the induction of the former CMM but probably not for the latter.

“…Histologically, SSM was the predominant histological type in all age groups, while NMs were relatively underrepresented at younger ages and more frequently found in older patients, also in agreement with findings of other authors . “…In this study, HNMs represented 26·7% of all incident melanomas, confirming the importance of this location in terms of public health. This rate was even higher than those previously reported: 22·3% in a population‐based study in another French region; 15·0–24·0% of all cutaneous melanomas and 12·0–20·0% of invasive cases in other European populations; and 18·0% of invasive melanomas in the U.S.A., according to the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results programme . The high rate of HNMs in our study could be explained by the demographic characteristics of the Champagne‐Ardenne region, which is, to a large extent, a rural region that is home to a large number of elderly people .…”

“…Among all melanomas, head and neck melanomas (HNMs) deserve special consideration for several reasons. Firstly, they are more frequent than expected with regard to the surface of this anatomical area, with an estimated frequency of 12–26% of cutaneous melanomas concentrated in 9% of the whole body surface . Secondly, they occur in older people, and their incidence could increase considerably with the widespread increase in life expectancy in developed countries.…”

“…However, the results are comparable to that of previously reported incidence rates. 5,20,[23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] A recent publication with predictions of melanoma incidence in Catalonia gives similar predicted incidence rates for males in 2010, and slightly higher rates for 2015, but rates for females were much higher (WSR 17 and 22 for women in 2010 and 2015 respectively), probably pointing to underlying regional differences in incidence in Spanish regions. 31 Especially in Italy and Germany only a few regional cancer registries participated, either because of the inclusion criteria or because they did not respond to our request to participate.…”
