Malignant Melanoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma Forming One Tumour on a Burn Scar

Abstract: Malignant melanoma occurring in burn scars is rare and cases of malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma arising in a burn scar are extremely rare. We report a case of malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma arising in one tumour on a stable thermal burn scar on the right leg of a 55-year-old man after a long latent period of about 50 years. The case was unique in that the malignant melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma occurred synchronously next to each other and produced one tumour. Immunohistoc… Show more

“…Only a single case report in the literature describes a collision tumor between squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma. Akiyama et al [1]have previously described a 55-year-old man presenting an invasive melanoma and squamous-cell carcinoma at the same site within an old burn scar. The present case documents the rare association of malignant melanoma in situ and squamous-cell carcinoma in the same lesion in a child with xeroderma pigmentosum.…”

“…However, collision tumors comprising squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma are exceptional. The few previously documented cases of squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma arising next to each other involved adults and occurred in the skin, oral and genital mucosa [1, 2, 3]. We herein describe a 13-year-old boy with xeroderma pigmentosum presenting a collision tumor comprising squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma in situ on the nose.…”

“…SCCA1 acts to protect UV-exposed (stressed) keratinocytes from apoptosis (34). SCCA-1 and 2 have been associated with several different forms of cancer, but never directly with the rare squamous cell carcinomas development in burn tissue (35,36). Thus this molecule is a newly discovered candidate protein in the burn wound.…”

“…Plusieurs cas de MM sont rapporté s en association avec des CE argumentant le rô le de la brû lure dans la pathogé nie de cette dé gé né rescence [2,16]. La rareté de MM sur cicatrice de brû lure est expliqué e par la rareté de mé lanocytes dans les tissus brû lé s. L'excision chirurgicale des cicatrices de brû lure avec suture simple ou la ré alisation de greffe é tait indiqué e en pré vention de ces dé gé né rescences [13,14].…”
