“…Curtis et al in .discussing the relationship of cancer to dermatomyositis had suggested that tumor catabolic products might serve as an allergen initiating the disease. 51 The findings in our case were consistent with this view. Dermatomyositis may thus represent a relatively rare and generalized manifestation of a more common sensitivity reaction in malignant tumors.…”

“…Curtis (1952) suggested that tumour catabolic products may serve as allergen initiating the disease, and with Heckeman and Wheeler (1961) demonstrated skin-sensitising antibody to tumour extract in a patient with dermatomyositis and metastatic carcinoma of the lung from the sigmoid colon. Similar results had previously been obtained by Grace and Dao (1959) in a patient with carcinoma of breast, and they too postulated that sensitivity played a role in the genesis of dermatomyositis.…”

“…There is also a high incidence of malignant disease, including gastro-intestinal cancer, in this condition; the relationship is so constant that a continuing search for malignancy is indicated in every patient with dermatomyositis (Curtis, Blaylock and Harrell, 1952;Dowling, '955).…”
