Male‐female differences in the earliest stages of drug involvement

Abstract: Previously documented male excess in rates of drug use may be due to greater male exposure to opportunities to try drugs, rather than to greater chance of progressing from initial opportunity to actual use. This suggests that sex differences in drug involvement emerge early in the process. Implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the epidemiology and prevention of drug use, and future research on sex differences in drug involvement.

“…Rates of drug addiction are higher in men, though rates are increasing in women (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2001). There is some evidence to suggest that sex differences in prevalence of use may be due to increased drug use opportunity in men compared to women (Van Etten et al, 1999). Our results suggest that women may have a greater biological vulnerability to become addicted to drugs, and that once addicted, may be more motivated than men to continue to use drugs.…”

“…Despite the attempts of explanation, based on the different opportunities of initiation the use of drugs between genders, 25 it is recognized that the bi-directional model is only valid for males.…”

“…Women are less likely to be diagnosed with cocaine use disorders 1 and tend to initiate use of cocaine at an older age than do men. 2,3 Women dependent on cocaine express more craving when exposed to cocaine cues, 4,5 and experience a heightened vulnerability to the physical, psychiatric, and social consequences of substance use. 6 In light of the growing literature demonstrating discrete differences in the brains of men and women, neurobiological substrates may underlie the different clinical trajectories of men and women with addictive disorders.…”
