Male circumcision for prevention of homosexual acquisition of HIV in men

Abstract: Current evidence suggests that male circumcision may be protective among MSM who practice primarily insertive anal sex, but the role of male circumcision overall in the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among MSM remains to be determined. Therefore, there is not enough evidence to recommend male circumcision for HIV prevention among MSM at present. Further research should be of high quality and further explore interaction with the predominant sexual role.

“…Most MSM are likely to be infected through a receptive rather an insertive role, which would further dilute the effects of MC in this population. In a Cochrane review by Wiysonge et al, including 21 observational studies (6 cohort, 14 cross-sectional, 1 case-control; 71,693 participants) were analyzed to assess the impact of circumcision for preventing HIV infection in MSM males the risk for HIV acquisition was not associated with MC (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.7-1.06) [76]. In a subgroup analysis of men reporting an insertive role, MC was found to be protective (3465 participants; OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.17-0.44).…”

“…In Western countries, HIV primarily infects men who have sex with men, a cohort that has not been reliably proven to be protected by NTC [41,42]. In any event, as Frisch et al state, "sexually transmitted HIV infection is not a relevant threat to children" [43].…”
