“…The water rapidly recovered to normal concentrations, but the sediments still contained typical petroleum hydrocarbon 7 months later (Zanardi et al, 1999b). Migotto et al (1993) argued that the continuous input of contaminants reduced the number of species and the abundance of molluscs in the São Sebastião littoral. The results obtained in stations 7 and 10 (situated near the DTCS terminal) confirmed this trend of lower density values and reduced species number.…”

“…Most species are now restricted to relatively limited geographic ranges and have specialized niches being, therefore, considered a group of rare species (Coan & Valentich‐Scott, ; Harper, Dreyer, & Steiner, ; Harper, Hide, & Morton, ; Morton, ). Species from the families Cuspidariidae, Pandoridae, Periplomatidae and Thraciidae have been recorded from the northern coast of São Paulo state, in southeastern Brazil (Amaral & Nallin, ; Migotto, Tiago, & Magalhães, ; Salvador, Domaneschi, Amaral, Morgado, & Henriques, ; Soares‐Gomes & Pires‐Vanin, ; Tallarico et al, ).…”

“…At the São Paulo coast, three species were found in the São Sebastião channel, on the shore of the São Sebastião Island (MIGOTTO et al 1993, SALVADOR et al 1998, and on the rocky shores of São Francisco (DENADAI & AMARAL 1999). The greatest colour plate diversity of individuals was observed on the coast of Rio de Janeiro (RODRIGUES & ABSALÃO 2005).…”
