Making Social Work Count: A Curriculum Innovation to Teach Quantitative Research Methods and Statistical Analysis to Undergraduate Social Work Students in the United Kingdom

Abstract: Students in the United Kingdom (UK) are found to lack knowledge and skills in quantitative research methods. In order to address this gap, a quantitative research method and statistical analysis curriculum comprised of 10 individual lessons was developed, piloted, and evaluated at two universities in the UK. The evaluation found BSW students' (N=81) self-efficacy to improve significantly from pre-to post-test, but statistical knowledge improved only slightly and was not statistically significantly. The finding… Show more

“…As users of the digital platform, social workers in the three municipalities provided valuable input on adapting it to their needs. A general challenge in training social workers is that they are trained almost exclusively in the use of qualitative methods and have very limited experience with quantitative indicators or data (Taylor, 1990; Teater et al, 2017). Consequently, it was necessary to overcome unfamiliarity, and in some cases skepticism, among social workers regarding the use of the standardized measures in MOMP.…”

“…Notwithstanding George Smiley's caution and the fallibility of method, statistical expertise plays an increasingly important role in generating and interpreting quantitative evidence to inform policy and practice (Teater et al 2017;Flyberg et al 2019); and training in statistical skills has always needed to keep pace with ongoing developments in analytical practice (Tu and Greenwood 2012;Porta et al 2015;Efron and Hastie 2016;Hokimoto 2017;Lübke et al 2020). Indeed, perhaps the most important contribution that statistics can make to evidence-based decision-making (and, by extension, the contribution that statistical skills training can make to professionals and the lay public, alike) is in revealing and dealing with the many different sources of bias that can occur when analysing and interpreting obvious, observable differences between ostensibly comparable phenomena (Flyberg et al 2019).…”
