In this article, we examine the ways in which the notion of interdisciplinarity was understood, implemented and experienced by researchers at a government-funded Chilean climate research centre. Our multi-site ethnography, consisting of interviews, participant observations, and document analysis, was motivated by three key aims. First, to generate an inductive, multi-faceted picture of the lived meaning of “interdisciplina” at the Centre; second, to explore whether and to what extent the “peripheral” features of the research context would exacerbate the challenges associated with practicing interdisciplinarity, and third, to see whether frictions between disciplines at the Centre could be considered productive “dissonances” in Stark’s sense of the term. We found that despite the centre efforts to produce a common framework to regulate interdisciplinary research, its researchers nevertheless understood, enacted and experienced it in diverse ways. More specifically, we found that researcher´s conceptions of interdisciplinarity were coloured by their lived experiences of attempting to practice it, and in particular by the benefits and costs they associated with doing so. This in turn was linked to several variables, including the specific balance between disciplines, the absence or presence of shared, clearly-defined goals, the affirmation of a common research ethic or motivational commitment, and the structural-material conditions of the research in question. We also found that the research conditions characteristic of the Global South do tend to exacerbate the well-documented challenges associated with interdisciplinarity, yet that the adversities associated with precarious conditions were often met by increased resilience and bonding among researchers, who use creative and collaborative strategies to adapt to adversity.

“…My emphasis here will be on how this modality of journalism deploys a critique that assures it a specific form of publicization, mobilizing a diffuse morality-in this specific case, a morality resulting from violentization, centred on the social accumulation of violence (MISSE, 1999)-more than the aforementioned consensuses relating to so-called 'serious journalism' (journalismo de referência,Costa, 2016).23 An example of this condition is demonstrated byPuliti (2009), who explores the idea of mainstream economic analysis as a form of columnism grounded precisely in supposed (though debatable) consensuses in economic journalism. Another one is on the work ofUndurraga (2017).24 Here I have made somewhat free use of this term, especially through reference to the idea of violence as a social representation found in Misse, Machado da Silva and Porto. O objetivo de A força da graça, a graça da força: A crítica jocosa aos personagens da 'violência urbana' nas capas de um jornal popular como 'violentização' da fala pública é analisar como um conjunto de representações sobre a violência urbana no Rio de Janeiro se desdobra em críticas jocosas públicas. Isso é feito por meio de um estudo de cerca de 2400 capas do jornal popular Meia Hora, notório por sua apresentação jocosa das notícias, no período entre 2011 e 2017, correspondente a uma rotinização estabelecida por conta das Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora (UPPs). A análise mostrou como a ridicularização operada na crítica jocosa expressa representações sobre três figuras centrais no cenário da violência urbana fluminense: o bandido, o policial e o próprio Rio de Janeiro como ordem social.This article sets out to analyse how a set of social representations of urban violence in Rio de Janeiro is revealed in public humorous critique. The research is based on a study of around 2,400 covers of the tabloid Meia Hora, famous for its comic presentation of the news, which were published between 2011 and 2017, a period corresponding to a routinization established by Rio's Pacifying Police Units (UPPs). The analysis reveals how the ridicule deployed in humorous critique expresses the social representations of three main figures in the context of Rio de Janeiro's urban violence: the criminal, the police officer and Rio de Janeiro itself as a social order.

Journalism is considered essential to a functioning democracy. However, the continued viability of commercial news production is uncertain. News producers continue to lose advertising revenue to platform businesses dominating digital advertising markets, and alternate consumer direct revenue streams are not yet meeting the financial shortfall. This has led to questions of who should pay for news, the role of governments in maintaining news production viability, and whether digital platforms have social or economic responsibilities to pay news publishers. In this article, we seek to make explicit what is often implicit in such debates, which is the value of news. This is hard to know in advance as news is an experience good whose value and quality are only known after consuming it, and a credence good, whose perceived qualities may not be observable even after it is consumed. As such, preparedness to pay for news can be hard to ascertain, accentuated by the large amount of free news available online. This article seeks to use a value perspective to consider the relationship between individual consumer choices and questions of news’s value to society. Applying a new institutional economic perspective, it is observed that the value of news as a consumer product needs to be examined in relation to its value as a social good in democratic societies as both a media product and part of the institutional environment in which other social actors operate. We consider news’s social and economic value within a context of platformed news distribution and declining advertising revenues that appear to be structural and not cyclical.
