Adsorbed gas plays a key role in organic-rich shale gas production due to its potential to contribute up to 60% of the total gas production. The amount of gas potentially adsorbed on organic-rich shale is controlled by thermal maturity, total organic content (TOC), and reservoir pressure. Whilst those factors have been extensively studied in literature, the factors governing desorption behaviour have not been elucidated, presenting a substantial impediment in managing and predicting the performance of shale gas reservoirs. Therefore, in this paper, a simulation study was carried out to examine the effect of reservoir depth and TOC on the contribution of adsorbed gas to shale gas production. The multi-porosity and multi-permeability model, hydraulic fractures, and local grid refinements were incorporated in the numerical modelling to simulate gas storage and transient behaviour within matrix and fracture regions. The model was then calibrated using core data analysis from literature for Barnett shales. Sensitivity analysis was performed on a range of reservoir depth and TOC to quantify and investigate the contribution of adsorbed gas to total gas production. The simulation results show the contribution of adsorbed gas to shale gas production decreases with increasing reservoir depth regardless of TOC. In contrast, the contribution increases with increasing TOC. However, the impact of TOC on the contribution of adsorbed gas production becomes minor with increasing reservoir depth (pressure). Moreover, the results suggest that adsorbed gas may contribute up to 26% of the total gas production in shallow (below 4,000 feet) shale plays. These study findings highlight the importance of Langmuir isothermal behaviour in shallow shale plays and enhance understanding of desorption behaviour in shale reservoirs; they offer significant contributions to reaching the target of net-zero CO2 emissions for energy transitions by exhibiting insights in the application of enhanced shale gas recovery and CO2 sequestration — in particular, the simulation results suggest that CO2 injection into shallow shale reservoirs rich in TOC, would give a much better performance to unlock the adsorbed gas and sequestrate CO2 compared to deep shales.

Characteristics of complex gas-water distribution affect the efficient exploration of tight gas. The paper aims at tight sandstone gas-water distribution characteristics of He8 Member in Sulige Gas Province (SGP), describes thickness and TOC of source rocks from Benxi Formation in Carboniferous to the Second Member of Shanxi Formation in Permain, evaluates its hydrocarbon generation potential, discusses its controlling effect on tight sandstone gas-water distribution, and determines the threshold values of Ro and HGI of commercial gas flow wells. Research shows that the coal-measure source rock has the characteristics of extensive and superimposition. The coal seam and dark mudstone is the lithology of source rock, and its Ro is chiefly distributed 1.2% ∼ 2.1% in the stage of high mature thermal evolution, which is mainly type III kerogen. Among them, the thickness of coal seam is mainly ranged from 5 ∼ 15 m with an average of 9.32 m, and its average TOC is 64.08% and the distribution of HGI is (1∼36) ×108 m3/km2. No.8 and No.5 coal seams are relatively stable. The extent of thickness of dark mudstone is mainly between 10m and 30m with an average of 21.2m, and its average TOC is 2.11%, HGI is between (0.2∼10)×108m3/km2. Gas reservoir of He8 Member is tight sandstone lenticular reservoirs with the large-area quasi-continuous distribution. When the gas testing production is less than 1 × 104m3/d, the controlling effect of Ro and HGI are relatively obvious, and its controlling effect is obviously weakened with the increase of gas production. When Ro is more than 1.6%-1.7%, or HGI is larger than 15 × 108m3/km2, the decreasing trend of water/gas ratio is evident, especially in commercial gas flow wells (including high producing gas flow wells). In comparison, the controlling effect of HGI is stronger than Ro. 1.33% and 8 × 108 m3/km2 are the threshold values of Ro and HGI for commercial gas flow wells, respectively.

Enhance The Properties of Cellulose Fracturing Fluids By Cellulose Nanocrystals

With inspiration from the enhancement of the viscoelasticity of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) on hydrogels, we paid attention to cellulose fracturing fluids prepared from the CNCs skeleton reinforced covalently cross-linked cellulose networks. In this paper, we hybridized CNCs with sodium CMC-Na to form nano cellulose fracturing fluids, characterized the performance of nano hybrid fracturing fluids and analyzed the nano-crystals enhancing fracturing fluid performance mechanism. It showed that the apparent viscosity, temperature tolerance, elastic modulus, and tensile strength of cellulose fracturing fluids were improved by CNCs. Compared with the blank cellulose fracturing fluids, the viscosity value of nano-cellulose fracturing fluids at 120 ℃ reached 195mPa·s, with an increase of 200 %, and the elastic modulus was 30Pa, with an increase of about 253 %. Furthermore, the microscopic analysis revealed that CNCs can play the role of nucleus and skeleton in the network structure of cellulose fracturing fluids and obviously enhanced the strength of the network structure. It is obvious to improve the performance of the fracturing fluids by adding CNCs into the cellulose fracturing fluids. This method provides a new idea for the development of fracturing fluids suitable for unconventional reservoirs.
